Do-Over: Gauntlet Update Is The Game Devs Envisioned

Arrowhead Studios’ latest dev blog update for Gauntlet official site] pretty much doubles as a post-mortem. Written by game director Emil Englund (and presumably also Marvel hero, with that alliteration), it’s revealed the team haven’t been too happy with their reboot of ye olde dungeon runner.

Wot I Think: Gauntlet

Gauntlet has always been a simple pleasure. Run through a dungeon with up to three pals, killing hundreds of monsters as a team, nicking treasure from one another like arch rivals, and shooting the food a split second before your wounded wizard chum manages to grab it. Arrowhead, of Magicka fame, have taken the reigns for this latest installment of the veteran series. Here’s wot I think.

Smell The Glove: The Magicka Devs’ Gauntlet Revamp

Hey. I love my mum. Thanks.

“Cor, Gauntlet yeh, remember playing it in the chippie, yeah?” I don’t, no, and I’ll thank you to stop dripping fag ash on my foot you awful drunken lout. However, my interest in a new game with co-op by the Magicka wizards at Arrowhead Game Studios is enough to overcome my general disdain for cynical attempts by publishers to cash in on old names they’ve remembered they own the rights to.

A new trailer gives a look at several gameplay minutes of Arrowhead’s reboot-o-revamp-a-namesake of the arcade magical murderfest, simply Gauntlet, and a new release date.

A Game And A Chat: GDC BFFCast Day 4/#1ReasonToBe

Hello, roving pile of RPS readers. Have you seen GDC day three laying about? I appear to have misplaced it. Or perhaps I am Gabe Newell, and I simply willed the number three out of existence or at least ignored it until it got bored and went away. Regardless, we’ve returned in style for day four, by which I mean we gracelessly crammed as many interesting humans onto John’s hotel bed as possible. This time around guests include Ashly and Anthony Burch of Hey Ash Whatcha Playin/Borderlands/infinity other things fame, Towerfall creator Matt Thorson, ever-handsome journo/Maia writer Paul Dean, Harmonix vet and Fire Hose talky man Sean Baptiste, and more still. They join John, Hayden, and I to discuss GDC’s overwhelmingly powerful #1ReasonToBe panel, the equally impactful Lost Levels “unconference,” the creeping toll constant layoffs are taking on the gaming industry, the new Arrowhead-developed Gauntlet game, the absurdly delightful Night In The Woods, and tons more. This is quite an episode! Tune in below.

Four Play: Arrowhead Developing Gauntlet Reboot

Atari announced Roller Coaster Tycoon 4 today. You may have seen the trailer. At best, it’s a mobile version of an older game rather than an actual sequel – at worst, it’ll behave like a crooked carnie, with all kinds of freemium delaying and money-grabbing tactics. “Pay one dollar to add glue to the coconut shy or your visitors will bankrupt you!” Only a few minutes after seeing that trailer, I received notice that Warner Bros are releasing a new Gauntlet game. I’d donned my grumpy hat before I even clicked the play button beneath the video. And then the hat combusted as I saw that it’s being developed by Magicka maestros Arrowhead. And that it looks ace.
