DevLog Watch: Thief Story & Irkalla

By Graham Smith on March 10th, 2014.

Two great looking games that look great together.

Mondays are a great day for giving a little love to new, in-development indie projects. There’s fast becoming no better place to find those projects than TIGSource’s DevLog forum, where developers regularly post screenshots, GIFs and audio samples from their upcoming projects. By my eye, the games most in demand of some attention currently are Thief Story, a cutesy, Nintendo-ish, top-down game about stealing stuff, and Irkalla, a side-scrolling shooter with fabulous pixel art.

More info and GIFs below.

Give The GIF Of Terror: The Animating Of Ethan Carter

By Alec Meer on December 18th, 2013.

The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter is what the main folk behind Bullestorm did next, and the combination of spooky forests and some bloke’s name makes it impossible not to claim it sounds like Alan Wake. However, it sounds like it’s branching off down the Dear Esther/Gone Home path rather than the shootybang one, which for my money often results in more atmosphere than a storm of bullets does. See also Silent Hill’s walking/worrying sections vs Silent Hill’s monster-clobbering sections. This is first-person, I should mention.

Very little is known about Ethan Carter really, but they are very proud of their graphics engine and its use of ‘photogrammetric’ technology. As far as I can tell that means turning 2D images of real-world scenes into 3D game scenes. Kind of like the faces in the first Max Payne, only with hills and stuff? Anyway, they’re using GIFs to demonstrate it. Look at our website daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaance.

The RPS 17,777th Party Post: Curtain Simulator 2013

By Craig Pearson on July 19th, 2013.

That is a curtain!
If you think about it, curtains are responsible for our sanity. Without them we wouldn’t be able to be ourselves. Imagine spending all your time putting on a front, putting on trousers. No, curtains are pretty much necessary to keep the world a sane, less testicley place. Which means it’s about time they entered popular culture via a game. Curtain Simulator 2013 is that game. A game where you can twitch curtains in various scenarios. You’ll be relaxing in a front room, or attending the horrors of some sort of electronic dance event, where all manner of curtains are simulated. Plucking at the billowing material can be surprisingly relaxing, but you can pluck too hard, shredding them into confetti. It’ about five minutes of fun, or ten if you have a drape fetish. Warning: the rest of this post has nothing to do with curtains.
