Grand Theft Auto 5 PC Review

By Graham Smith on April 17th, 2015.

Michael and Trevor. I like Michael, I loathe Trevor.

In the audio commentary for the movie Bad Day at Black Rock, director John Sturges quoted Alfred Hitchcock, who had told him a rule for making movies called “Meanwhile, back at the ranch.” He explains, “You want to have two things going. You reach the peak of one, you go to the other. You pick the other up just where you want it. When it loses interest, drop it. Meanwhile, back at the ranch.”

After its opening act, Grand Theft Auto V [official site] lets you switch at any moment between its three criminal characters: retired thief Michael, young hopeful Franklin, and the psychotic Trevor. You’ll perform some missions as one and, as you grow weary or their plot begins to lose interest, you can switch to either of the others. When you arrive, their story is already in motion, and you’ll find them at home, having a fight in a car park, or perhaps drunk among some farm animals. Meanwhile, back at the ranch.

GTA V Is Out: Here’s The First Replay Editor Video

By Graham Smith on April 14th, 2015.

It’s no accident that the first video made using Grand Theft Auto V‘s [official site] new PC replay editor is well-shot and edited, since it was commissioned specifically by Rockstar to show off the power of the new tool. You can watch it below: it’s called Running, Man, it’s about Trevor going for a jog, and I’ve included another recent trailer which explains the abilities of the Replay Editor that you can use for yourself as soon as your copy of the game finishes download.

Grand Theft Avatar: GTA As Immersive Sim

By Adam Smith on April 4th, 2015.

Grand Theft Auto is many things to many people but I’ve usually found a way to enjoy each new entry as a sedate urban exploration game. I like stopping at red lights and honking my horn at dangerous drivers. I like listening to people talking on their mobile phones and I love that accidents occasionally happen while I’m trundling by. With its brand new first-person perspective option, GTA V may be one of the great immersive sims, packed with emergent moments both mundane and magnificent.

Gridlock: GTA V Delayed Again

By Adam Smith on February 24th, 2015.

Where is it? Where is the GTA?

It’s time for the February Edition of the monthly “Grand Theft Auto V Delay” post.

“Our apologies to PC gamers worldwide who have been counting down the days until the launch of the game, but a bit more time is needed to ensure that the game is as polished as possible, and to make certain that both Heists and the GTA Online experience are ready to roll out on day one for PC. As a gesture of thanks for your understanding, we will grant anyone who has pre-ordered the game an additional $200,000 in-game cash for use in GTA Online.”

The new release date is April 14th. The next release date is unknown at this time.

GTA 5 System Requirements Come With Delay Til March 24

By Graham Smith on January 13th, 2015.

My face.

The game I was most looking forward to in January has just been pushed back again. Grand Theft Auto V – released on consoles in September 2013, and on some more consoles in November 2014 – is now coming to PC on March 24th.

Oh well. There are some system requirements below, should you want to check whether you can run it in the meantime.

GTA 5 PC Release Date Postponed: Gripe City

By Alec Meer on September 12th, 2014.

Good news, urban misanthropy fans: Rockstar have offered a few more details on the PC (and PS4/Xbone) version of Grand Theft Auto V, and put out a new trailer showing it off.

Bad news: they’ve also announced a delay for the PC edition. Nobody loves us waaaaaaaaaaaaah.

GTA V In Cars, Guns, Strippers & Posturing Shocker

By Alec Meer on April 30th, 2013.

Isn't that Harvey Pekar?

There will be a new GTA game soon. Maybe it’ll be on PC. It has three characters, all of which are violent, sweary men. It has some improvements to the graphics. It’s spent a lot on music and voice-acting. It has the same sort of gags as the last dozen GTA games/expansions, but with different words. It really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really wants to be a movie.

Here are three new trailers, cunningly combined into one, and focusing exclusively on the story rather than on what you get to do. With crushing, miserable inevitability, there is a strip club scene, because there is always a strip club scene. IGN or someone will have a shot-by-shot analysis any second now, but you can watch the plain old videos below if you really want to.

Take Two Show Big Profit, XCOM Still Happening

By John Walker on February 6th, 2013.

It’s not all doom and despair in game publishing, you know. While we’ve seen the very sad loss of THQ, and are surrounded by reports of others in lots of trouble, Take Two have just announced a increase in revenues of a whopping 244%. That’s a milliontysquillionty pounds, and it’s in a year without a GTA game to send their shares rocketing. That’s impressive stuff, especially for a publisher known to struggle without Rockstar’s powerhouse on the schedule, and it’s thanks to Borderlands 2, NBA 2K13 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Oh, and the FPS XCOM is still a thing.

Vaguely Does It: PC GTA V “Up For Consideration”

By Alec Meer on November 20th, 2012.

A PC gamer feeling sad that he might not get to play GTA V, yesterday

The recent torrent of marketing and marketing masquerading as news surrounding the latest GTA V trailer came with one unsettling ommission – any mention of a PC version of Rockstar’s newest open world misanthropy odyssey. There’s still no definite news of a release for the One True Format, but Rockstar have at least not ruled it out when the question was put them.

GTA V: Grand Theft Auto 5, Trailer 2

By Jim Rossignol on November 14th, 2012.

ATTACK OF THE MEN.
Gee-Tav’s Second Trailer Is Here! Well, below, anyway. It shows us a little bit more of the giant open world’s three-man story of glitzy gangsterism and vehicular vehicularisms. The game, which is due next spring, will apparently feature “yoga, triathlons, Jet Skiing, base-jumping, tennis, golf, scuba diving or go to the gym.” A bit like the RPS office, that. Only with less macho sportsmanship.

Grandest: GTA V Is Bigger Than GTA IV

By Adam Smith on November 9th, 2012.

This man is not stealing a car.

Remember the quote from the guy at the game company who said that the sequel to a commercially successful title would be “smaller, probably not as appealing to a mass audience and much more low-key”? Of course not – sequels are ‘bigger’ and ‘better’. Ask anyone working on a AAA franchise what their role is and whatever the specifics, you’ll quickly find that they work in either the ‘enlargement’ or ‘improvement’ department. This is as true at Rockstar as anywhere else, so it’s no surprise that Game Informer’s reveal of GTA V details harps on about size. The issue itself is even Game Informer’s most massive sequel – “our biggest cover story yet!” – but what does it actually tell us?

The Impossible Bicycle: GTA 5 Screenshotified

By Alec Meer on August 20th, 2012.

haha, made you look at a man's bottom

For every Rockstar game since Vice City, the promotional screenshots have been rendered on a PC that only God herself could own, post-processed by a version of Photoshop from the 24th century and employed camera angles that you could only play the game from for 2.7 seconds before driving into a wall. It’s oddly reassuring to see that rich tradition continues with the latest round of screenshots from the little-shown Grand Theft Auto 5. Click for embiggenation of all of these.

Behold! A snazzy-looking bicycle as ridden by a man wearing the most heavily anti-aliased lycra trousers you’ve ever seen!

GTA V About “Pursuit Of The Almighty Dollar”

By Jim Rossignol on November 3rd, 2011.

That's your jumper, that is.
As the internet boils over into an Ouroboros of speculation over the GTAV trailer, the full statement from Rockstar is brief and to the point:

Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created. A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present day Southern California.

Other important notes: 1) We will now be calling this game “Gee Tav”. 2) PCG’s explanation of the multiple protagonists theory seems solid to me.
