InSomnia Has Old-School RPG Style, Modern Graphics

If you’ll remember, we’ve posted about InSomnia before on RPS – Adam because he came across the “dieselpunk” post-apocalyptic role-player’s Kickstarter page, and me because I never sleep. Unfortunately, the Kickstarter ultimately met its untimely end in the dank, art deco-rated tunnels of obscurity, pulling in only a small fraction of the $70,000 it needed. Part of that, developer MONO contends, is due to miscommunications on what exactly the game entails. It’s about to launch another Kickstarter, but before it does that, it wants to clear a few things up. New trailer and details below.

Dieselpunk Disquiet: Insomnia Kickstarts

I briefly mentioned online RPG Insomnia when it first came to my attention a couple of weeks ago but now that the project’s Kickstarter campaign has started, it’s worth revisiting. Studio MONO are eager to point out the differences between a massively multiplayer roleplaying game and their game, which is online but not from the same mould as WOW and its ilk. If it all comes together as planned, it seems like it’ll have the strengths of a single player game, including scripted and procedural quests, alongside larger events involving more than sixty players. The art design, described as ‘dieselpunk’, is lovely, in a rusted and charred sort of way. Do make sure to look at the team photos. Lead developer Anatoliy Guyduk is terrifying.

Sleep Between The Stars: InSomnia

Everyone at RPS suffers from insomnia once in a while, or at least we all spend the early hours of every Tuesday morning clutching bedclothes tightly around our chests, in the grip of a sweat colder than a British summer, wondering if rolling our eyes at Call of Duty is an actual job. It’s natural to assume that a game that goes by the name Insomnia would be a survival horror game about such acts of lonely introspection but the trailer and press release for the first project from Russian studio MONO reveal something entirely different. It’s an online RPG with tactical combat and procedurally generated sandbox elements, set on a generation ship of sorts. The video is a demonstration of the tech and setting rather than an exposition-packed chunk of narrative.

In Your Facebook: Outernauts Out Now

Grid-based asynchronous battles await in Insomnia’s first Facebook game, which is now available to play. I like every word in that sentence except ‘Facebook’, although I also dislike ‘first’ if it appears below one of my posts, orphaned from the rest of the English language. I didn’t get on with Resistance but Ratchet & Clank was a fun time and Outernauts’ character designs have more in common with that series. Nathan dubbed the game “space Pokemon” and that seems accurate, with alien creatures to capture, train and pit against one another. It looks quite decent, but takes the approach of having players pay or wait to take action, which means that now I’ve run out of energy I’ll probably forget to ever go back.
