Rakuen: Paradise Found

By John Walker on September 17th, 2014.

Laura Shigihara’s Project Rakuen, now just Rakuen, has at last got a trailer to show. We first mentioned the combat-free RPG last year. Shigihara, brought to fame by her song for PopCap’s Plants Vs. Zombies, went on to work for the developer for a while, but is now fully indie once again. Alongside regularly recording songs for her popular YouTube channel, she has contributed to a number of other games, including Kan Gao’s To The Moon. And all the while has been working on Rakuen, about the fantasy world entered into by a young, hospitalised boy.

Patients, Now: Project Rakuen

By John Walker on October 15th, 2013.

After a stint working with PopCap, Plants Vs Zombies/To The Moon songwriter Laura Shigihara is indie once again. And for the last year she’s been working on Project Rakuen, a game she describes as “like a mix between Maniac Mansion, To the Moon, and The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (though without battles or fighting).” Set in a mysterious hospital, it’s a story of how a young boy uses his imagination to understand the world, and indeed other patients, around him.

Wot I Think: To The Moon

By John Walker on November 3rd, 2011.

Sniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiff.

Kan Gao’s To The Moon first came to our attention thanks to Laura “Plants Vs. Zombies theme” Shigihara. (I do hope for her sake she can lose the moniker soon.) Her involvement with the game’s music got us to take a look at early footage, and then it became something I desperately wanted to play. I was right to. No surprises here – this is an incredible game, and I’m going to tell you Wot I Think it is that makes it so.

Oh Dear No: Magic The Gathering Rap

By John Walker on October 31st, 2011.

This is the whitest thing I've ever seen.

You know what I like to see first thing in the morning? It’s Spelunky creator, Derek Yu, topless. Mmmmm-mmmmmmmm. Plants Vs Zombies songstress Laura Shigihara gets in touch to say she’s put up an extremely silly video, featuring Shigihara, Andy “Spelunky XBLA” Hull, George “Plants Vs. Zombies designer” Fan, Paul “Sword Of Legends” Hubans, Tommy “Super Meat Boy co-creator” Refenes, and the exposed nipples of Mr Yu. Sorry, what is it? It’s a rap about Magic: The Gathering, of course. And they’re calling themselves, Funktrollers.

Double Jump = Coverage: Celestial Mechanica

By John Walker on September 14th, 2011.

He's not kidding.

Laura Shigihara got in touch with us to let us know about another project she’s been working on. Coming to fame via singing the Plants Vs. Zombies theme, Shigihara recently worked on To The Moon, and now she alerts us to Celestial Mechanica. Created by Roger “rComplex” Hicks and Paul “Super Crate Box” Veer, Shigihara provides the vocals to the (impressive) music. And the game? A pixel-platformer with Metroidvania progression. There’s a trailer below.

If Memory Serves: To The Moon

By John Walker on August 9th, 2011.

See, I want to be there.

Here’s what I’d like to see/hear. An adventure game whose music doesn’t begin with a long strained note on a violin. Seriously, every single one does it now. Nothing wrong with it – I’d just like some variation. Joining their numbers is To The Moon – a sort of RPG adventure thing that attracted me by its excellent name, and then – as it happens – that the violiny music is from Laura Shigihara, she of the Plants Vs. Zombies theme.

Plants Vs Zombies: They Live! Also, Are Live!

By Kieron Gillen on June 26th, 2010.

I suspect Laura is the person least likely to keep people chopped up in her basement. That's just the vibe I get.

Having spent all Thursday working on my World of Love presentation and Friday actually doing it, I’m catching up with the gaming Internet. Hence, seeing Kotaku linking on Thursday to Laura Shigihara’s performing the song she wrote and performed in Plants Vs Zombies, There’s A Zombie On Your Lawn. Ah, 2009 flashback. ‘Tis very cute, and you’ll find it below…
