Let’s Chatter Over… Action Henk’s Toy-stalgic Butt Sliding

By Nathan Grayson on July 11th, 2014.

Are videogames art? Or are they toys, children’s playthings powered by tech so cutting-edge that it can cut the edges off other edges? Action Henk replies with a curt, confident, “Why not both?” It’s a toy-themed (think Toy Story) racer-platformer that hearkens to classics like old-school Sonic as well as modern leaderboard-driven stunt games like Trials. It’s simple and, as a result, refreshingly pure. It’s just you, the level, and your own easy-to-learn, hard-to-master bag of tricks. You vs other people’s times, you vs NPC ghosts, you vs yourself. It’s already quite good, is what I’m saying, and it’s only in Early Access. Watch below to see me play a bit and show off some of my favorite levels so far. Also I literally die in a fire on a few occasions, which should be fun for some of you.

Why Did Nobody Play The Floor Is Jelly?

By Nathan Grayson on June 3rd, 2014.

Hey you! Yeah, you. The one with the facial expression that says, “I think I have a relatively full and complete understanding of my world’s physical properties, including the basic solid nature of the ground beneath my feet.” YOU ARE WRONG. The Floor Is Jelly. Other things are jelly too. Trees, lamps, houses, your sense of morality – all of that. Really though, it’s not so bad once you get used to it. It’s pretty charming, even. The Floor Is Jelly is now on Steam, so I’ve made a quick video to show you why it’s a vibrant, soothing dive off the deep end that didn’t get near enough attention when it first came out earlier this year. Watch me bounce (and bounce and bounce and bounce) below.

Rise & Stream: Watch Us Chatter Over Thief, Resident Evil 4

By Nathan Grayson on March 2nd, 2014.

It’s that time of week again, the strange, giddy twilight between the new week and the old. It gives me strength, allowing me to briefly evolve from my larval news slave form into a full-blown human being with thoughts and feelings and a face. “What should I do with this incredible yet oh-so-fleeting window of opportunity?” I wonder aloud. “Fight crime? Raise money for good causes? Escape from RPS’ dank news basement and finally start a family?” But usually, I just end up playing videogames with a camera on my face. Yes, we’re rather late with this week’s episode due to various complicating factors, but shhhhh, shhhh, it’s all going to be OK now.

This time, Floorlord Hayden Dingman and I are going to jump between Thief, Resident Evil 4 HD, and maybe a little Warehouse and Logistics Simulator because I don’t even know why. We’ll kick off at 6 PM PT/2 AM GMT. Tune in below!

Update: we’re done! You can watch a recording of the whole thing below. Sadly, there was not time for Warehouses or Logistics, but we will venture down that unknowable rabbit hole in the future.

Video Impressions: Titanfall’s Beta

By Nathan Grayson on February 12th, 2014.

Titanfall‘s beta is officially kicking off on February 14th and lasting for, um, not very many days. Seems kind of odd in the year 2014 ADEA (Anno Domini Earlyaei Accessus), but oh well. Promotional beta or not, Titanfall continues to be worthy of a blinding, blip-blip-blipping spot on your radar. I got the chance to go hands-on with a very close to beta version for a couple hours, and not even an army of giant robots could stop me from recording a bunch of footage and word-vomiting insight all over it. The long and short of it? Titanfall continues to clomp along quite nicely, but I do have a number of balance/longevity concerns. Also, while NPCs add a new dynamic to battles, I’m not sure if they’re the perfect solution to the 6v6 issue. Check out the video below to see what I think (but not Wot I Think, obviously).

Let’s Chatter/Splatter Over… Hyper Light Drifter

By Nathan Grayson on December 21st, 2013.

Hyper Light Drifter is beautiful. Its loud yet effortless art direction screams a quiet confidence, a vision that’s both bold and incredibly vulnerable. I very much like what I see, and many, many others agree – to the tune of $645k, in fact. But looks alone don’t make a game. If Hyper Light Drifter doesn’t play well, then all the glowing pinks and passionate purples in the world won’t mean jack. And that would be very, very sad indeed. Go below to watch me play an early demo of the game and find out if it’s on the right track.

Let’s Chatter Over… Wasteland 2

By Nathan Grayson on December 12th, 2013.

While technically promotional art, my team looks almost *exactly* like this. Except with a homicidal pipe-wielding chef in place of the SWAT dude. Close enough.

Wasteland 2’s beta is officially go! Well, for backers anyway. I booted it up the second Steam finished prying it from some server’s synthetic grip, and I realized something: I was nervous. My expectations were riding extremely high, and I couldn’t help but fear that inXile’s return to post-apocalyptic role-playing’s roots would let me down. What I’d seen up to that point had my head ready to explode like a gerbil full of uncooked rice (and also a blood sausage), but maybe it wouldn’t all come together. Maybe it was pure promise and no execution. All bark, zero bite.

I was worried over nothing. Wasteland 2’s irradiated peaks and valleys are pretty rad so far. I have some minor quibbles (the interface is awkward, enemy AI can be really dumb, some bugs and glitches), but there’s quite a lot to like here. Watch me play through a few early sections below. Oh, and fair warning: slight spoilers ahead. Nothing too major, though.
