I’ve been waiting for a large-scale sci-fi MMO shooter ever since the original Planetside, and it looks like 2012 will do it’s best to provide. Before I fuel up Firefall’s jetpacks, or scrawl penises over Planetside 2′s map, it looks like I’ll be dropping into Line of Defense: of all those games, it’s the first with a release date, end of June, so I’d imagine the beta form that I just signed up to will deliver me from orbit to the action a tad sooner than the others. You know what? I’ve just noticed all those are free-to-play*. I mean, I knew that all were, but lumping them all together makes it quite the thing. As is the not-at-all-MMO-but -rather-shooty Tribes: Ascend. I wonder if I’ll ever need to pay for a shooter ever again? Line of Defense trailer is herein, btw.

Smartie has the answers: Derek Smart on Line of Defense
By Dan Griliopoulos on March 2nd, 2012.

Derek Smart is either famous or infamous, depending on who edited Wikipedia last. He’s either been making games for twenty years or making the same game for twenty years, and he’s either a maverick indie genius or mad fool, depending on who you ask. But he has never stopped making games. We caught up with him to talk about his new game, Line of Defense, a remarkably ambitious MMOFPS. It was pitched to us as a challenger to Planetside 2, and we asked him more about that.

Line Of Defense “Nightbridge” Glimpsed
By Jim Rossignol on April 27th, 2011.

3000AD’s upcoming MMOFPS Line Of Defense is big. The latest devblog reveals at that one of the base areas, Nightbridge, which is a base within a ruined city, is: “…nearly 2km x 3km massive.” And the surrounding environment is even more serious: “The entire scene itself – like the other three – is about 64km x 64km. A lot of space to run around in with weapons of mass destruction.”
Mr Smart says he’s worried that players of normal FPS games might end up being a bit overwhelmed by it all: “My single greatest concern at this point is that it is so huge that most gamers used to the “closed in” level based design of fps games, may just get lost in there. Or at best, be intimidated by the size of it all.” More screenshots here.
