Epigenesis has all the hallmarks of a game that’s being made up as it goes along, possibly to troll me. But after I watched the first trailer I asked my girlfriend if she just saw what I saw? She did. She is a games industry outsider, so you can trust her unbiased opinion. Epigenesis is a future sports FPS game where players toss balls into the goal, just like every future sports game asks you to do. But you also earn seeds for pushing your opponents off the platforms. Those seeds will allow you to transform the levels, creating plant bridges across gaps and bestow buffs onto nearby players. Not so long ago, we brought you word of Epigenesis‘ victory in this year’s Make Something Unreal competition, the theme of which was “Mendelian inheritance: genetics and genomics” because that is something it is indeed possible to make games about. So of course, Epigenesis turned it into a sky-scraping, neon-pulsating ball sport. I mean, how else would you convey that idea aside from literally every other conceivable way ever? But you know what? Now that a new trailer’s out in the wild, the idea’s actually starting to win me over. It’s just crazy enough to work, and where it wasn’t crazy enough of its own accord, developer Dead Shark Triplepunch (yes, that’s their real name) just added tornadoes. Done and done. I believe that also qualifies it for victory by default in the first annual Sports Nathan Wishes Were Real competition. The prize is getting mentioned in a throwaway joke that’ll be appreciated by nines of people and also several million dollars. Anyway, trailer, break, etc. Go watch.

That headline from the awkward videogame headline generator, there. What it means is this: the latest Make Something Unreal competition, which had a theme of ‘Mendelian Inheritance: genetics and genomics’ was won by a game developed in UDK (obviously) by ten-man Swedish team Dead Shark Triplepunch. They’ve bagged themselves full licences for the engine, and some hardware. The game, Epigenesis, is a multiplayer future sports game in which the players plant seeds in the map to alter the environment of play each time they score. They’re calling it “a potential e-sport”.

The current Make Something Unreal contest is approaching its Grand Final, but in a way it’s more interesting to take a look at the winners of the penultimate round of Unreal 3 mod face-offs, Phase 4. It’s a collection of truly excellent mods, demonstrating both the power and versatility of the latest Unreal engine, and how much better still it looks when someone with more imagination/willingness to risk-take than creators Epic take a crack at making something with it.
