Free Stomping: Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries

By Alec Meer on April 30th, 2010.

STOMP

Stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp. Stomp. Following up from Jim’s post a little while ago, The Thing That He Said Was Happening Has Now Happened. To whit, a reiggered version of Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries can now be downloaded and played for no-pennies, courtesy of proactive fan/developer collective MekTek. Yep, they’ve priced this juicy bone from the very jaws of the slavering Microsoft hound, which means all it now costs you is 1.7Gb of bandwidth. It comes with a clutch of MekTek’s improvements and additional units, weapons and the like too. Yeah, you’d better be grateful.

Download links and setup guides await you here. Stomp. STOMP.

Yes, Happening: Mechwarrior 4 Free

By Jim Rossignol on April 22nd, 2010.

That’s a refurbished Mechwarrior 4 for free, you understand. The chaps over at MekTek have been working on this for a while, and it seems that they’ve finally done it:

If you’ve been following the drama surrounding the free release of Mechwarrior4, than you would be aware that the initial announcement, made last summer, was a bit premature. After nearly a year since the announcement came, MekTek Studios is pleased to announce, that Microsoft Legal has given the all clear for the free release of Mechwarrior4. This hallmark movement by Microsoft Games couldn’t come at a better time, as the Mechwarrior community is attempting a rebirth, amidst announcement of a Mechwarrior Reboot. Thank you Microsoft.

Thanks, Microsoft. No release date yet, but hopefully it’ll be soon. (A new commercial Mechwarrior game, you might recall, has already been announced.)

Mechwarrior’s Twin Resurrections

By Alec Meer on October 30th, 2009.

Well, triple resurrections, if you also include the upcoming sequel/relaunch. For the purposes of this post though, it’s vintage Mechwarring. Not been able to try this myself yet – mainly due to the torturously slow proprietary bitorrent client necessary to download the thing – but there’s a whole lot afoot in Mechwarrior land. First, a major new version of a free remake of Mechwarrior 2 made in Blitzbasic. It’s called Assault Tech 1: Battletech. Tech tech? Tech. Tech! Apparently, it now looks better than the original, thanks to a revamped DirectX7 engine. Oh, mighty seven. Decide for yourself in the videos below. As an additional ray of robotic rapture, the MW fan/mod site behind AT1:BT, MekTek.net, are also gearing up to re-release the rather splendid Mechwarrior 4, in its DRM-free, modern-Windowsed entirety.
