Seeing Redstone: Mojang Details Minecraft’s 1.5 Update

By Nathan Grayson on November 27th, 2012.

BUSINESS.

While we slept off traditionally fatal turkey venoms or, you know, did non-festive things, Mojang took over Disneyland this weekend. No, no, Notch and co didn’t buy Disney (yet; that won’t happen for another couple years, at least), but they did host MineCon at Disneyland Paris. And though I imagine there was plenty of magic and childlike wonderment involved, they did – at certain points throughout the show – put on their business Mickey Mouse hats. Shockingly, Minecraft got the bulk of the attention during those rare instances, and 1.5 – now dubbed The Redstone Update – was the main attraction.

Minecon 2012 Will Be Held At Disneyland, Paris

By Jim Rossignol on August 3rd, 2012.

I'm wearing a similar hat. Right now.
Following the success of Minecon in Las Vegas last year, the latest, greatest gathering of block lovers will take place in Europe, at Disneyland Paris. I went there once. Dragged along as surly teenager by my over-keen family. The highlight of my trip was our daily visit to the theme-hotel restaurant, whose chalkboard proudly proclaimed an offering of “Barbecued Children.” The French-speaking staff refused to understand the humour in their error, leading me and mum to speculate that it might not have been an error at all. It was Disneyland, after all.

Comedy announcement trailer below. Registrations start in a few weeks.

The Cult Of Minecraft, Live

By Alec Meer on November 21st, 2011.

The Guinness Book of Records guys should probably take a note - largest gathering of people wearing cardboard boxes on their head

Minecon is done and dusted (no, we weren’t there – the RPS private zeppelin was in for servicing that week, so we couldn’t make it out to Vegas). Anyone go? If not, here’s a taste of what it was like, with the lavish, jokey keynote speech – featuring a history of Minecraft, a specially-commissioned animated short film documenting a day in the life of Steve, amateur dramatics, and appearances from all sorts of folk, including that woman with the pink hair, the Yogscast chaps and some guy in a hat called Markus. While witnessing such fervour around an indie game about building stuff is more than a little odd, it’s all very sweet and genuinely celebratory.

Mineception: Minecon’s Official Trailer

By Craig Pearson on November 10th, 2011.

Who invited that creeper? We know you’ve spend all day hitting F5 just for this, and finally the moment has arrived: Minecon’s official trailer is here. It shows the journey of Minecraft’s default avatar, Steve, from his lovely forest-based house all the way to Minecon. The con has been created in Minecraft. It’s so meta that I want to check that I’m writing this in the real world, and not some sort of facsimilie. Pinch me. No, not there. Lower…

Block Party: MineCon Is On

By Alec Meer on August 12th, 2011.

They'll all be there! On a poster.

If you’re the kind of chap who wants to talk to other chaps about redstone and biomes, you’ll be glad to hear that it’s full steam ahead for MineCon 2011, the first official Minecraft convention. It’s to be held in Vegas on November 18-19 (which means RPS won’t be there. How about a Britlander one too?) and tickets will cost you $99. That’s a lot of money, but it does mean you’ll be in the company of all manner of like-minded sorts as Minecraft finally, fully launches. There’ll also be keynotes from Notch, contests, folks in costumes, folks with foam pickaxes and merch. Of course there’ll be merch.

More details and ticket purchasing here.
