The Great Art Upgrade: Overlooked Bits Of Art/Gaming

“Can games be art?” It’s a question I spent part of yesterday complaining about while brandishing a forkful of jacket potato. I used to engage with the debate on those terms but it’s so unhelpful – a strange grab for cultural legitimacy by association. When it comes up in such an explicit way it tends to feel like the games industry has smeared itself with makeup, stolen its mother’s heels and is trying to get into a club it’s heard is super important using a fake ID.

That’s why I was curious to read The Great Art Upgrade by Paolo Pedercini. It’s an infodump/transcript from the Art History of Games keynote he delivered back in 2013. It covers off the main points of the conversations which were taking place (and still are) in mainstream and games media but then it flips over, focusing on what art has been doing with games over the most recent decades.

Fat Cat Simulator 2014: Play To Build A Better Mousetrap

Making that cheese, that cheddar, that Gouda, that mozzarella...

With a long weekend in full swing for (many of) us here in the UK, why not kick back, put your feet up, and enjoy a pleasant little management simulator? Those scallywags at molleindustria released To Build a Better Mousetrap on Thursday (International Workers’ Day, that was), putting players in charge of developing, making, and selling goods, as well as–sigh, I guess–making sure your rodentine workers are happy enough. Apparently that’s quite difficult to juggle, and arguably the happiest outcome doesn’t involve you at all.

As one would expect from molleindustria, it’s a ‘political game.’ (Not that all games aren’t political–avoiding detection by reproducing political values so central to our culture we scarcely notice them–but this is more overt.) But if you don’t fancy any of that talk, hey, it’s a pretty fun video game too!

A Little Cross: Run, Jesus Run!

Ironically, it’s RPS-reader Final Sin who brings us news of this product of the 10 Seconds theme of the Experimental Gameplay Project. It’s Run, Jesus Run! It’s all based on the gospel. It happens in 10 seconds. Left and right move. Space bar does Jesus stuff. Run, Jesus Run!

Faith Fighter 2: You Gotta Believe!

I can't help but disrespect religions. AND IN THE GAME, etc.

Have you been following the Faith Fighter controversy? If not, I’ll explain the background below, but it’s taken a fun turn. Molleindustria – who you may remember from Oiligarcy – found that their original Faith Fighter has outraged the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (and so indirectly 1.3 billion believers). Since Molleindustria was upset they missed their irony, they pulled the original from their site and made the tolerance-is-awesome Faith Fighter 2. And, really, it’s about as disingenuous as it gets. I feel the need to applaud.
