No More Monkey Business: Ron Gilbert Leaves Double Fine

By Nathan Grayson on March 12th, 2013.

Well, this is slightly unexpected. Ron Gilbert’s always kinda done his own thing, but sharing a colorful roof of pure, shining whimsy with partner in pirate-y crime Tim Schafer just sort of, you know, made sense. It is, however, like they say: all good things must come to an end. Also, The Cave was actually only kind of all right, so maybe this is for the best. But what’s next for the man they call “RonnyG” (and I guess also Grumpy Gamer)? Solve a series of increasingly obtuse puzzles to get past the break for more. Hint: the first one involves clicking. And also a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle.

Magical: Monkey Island’s Insult Swordfighting For Browser

By Nathan Grayson on January 15th, 2013.

I am rubber, you're a cow. Also, something about feather dusters.

It is one of the industry’s greatest crimes, I think, that the majority of games with swordfighting don’t include any sort of insult component. I mean, seriously: what happened? Where did we go wrong? I like to imagine that, off in some wonderful alternate dimension, things went the opposite way. People traded swords for words, and dairy farmers the world over reported an all-time low of self-esteem. In the dreary, sass-less dystopia we call reality, however, there is one shimmering lighthouse beacon of hope: a free browser-based version of Monkey Island 1 and 3’s classic variations on the theme. We can only pray that everyone who’s even the least bit interested in the oh-so-sensual art of swapping steel takes note this time around.

Ron Gilbert, Pt. 2: Legacy, Learning, And… Diablo?

By Nathan Grayson on June 2nd, 2012.

Look into my eyes. The real ones or the necklace. Whichever.

Yesterday, I had a chat with the first half of Ron Gilbert about his upcoming descent into madness (and in the game), The Cave. Shortly after, the other half of Ron Gilbert teetered awkwardly into the room, so I decided to speak with it as well. In this very special non-Cave-flavored episode, we discuss goofy adventure game logic, the ups and downs of being inextricably tied to a legendary hit like Monkey Island, leaving a legacy, rebelling against that legacy, and kids games like the secretly-completely-rad Pajama Sam. Also Diablo III for some reason. The thrilling conclusion’s after the break.

ReBooty: Monkey Island FPS Revealed

By Alec Meer on September 13th, 2011.

Still better than the third game, amirite?

‘Tis the season for it, apparently. Next from the roster of beloved PC games from the 90s to get a suitably modern first-person shooter remake is classic point and click adventure The Secret Of Monkey Island – now reimagined as an action title. “Time has moved on,” said LucasGames chief modernisation officer Ian Koticiello. “We’re big fans of the original Monkey Island(TM), we’re definitely paying as much homage to it as we can – bringing across the essence of the world, the core essence of what it is to be an inept wannabe pirate with a glock safe action pistol.”

M.O.N.K.E.Y., due in Q3 2012, “takes that viewpoint from the original game and zooms into Jack Threepwood’s head.” Featuring visceral pirate- and zombie-shooting action, a recharging Grog system and a extensive multiplayer mode which faithfully homages the original game by enabling gamers to take direct control over six beloved Monkey Island(TM) series characters in brutal deathmatch arenas, M.O.N.K.E.Y. brings this dark and gritty saga of high seas combat and undead horror to a whole new audience. You can see the first footage below.

Not So Secret: Play Monkey Island Right Here

By Alec Meer on April 30th, 2010.

Well, the first 20 minutes of it. But right here. Lucasarts have gotten into bed with streaming browser game specialists InstantAction and come up with a clever special edition of the Special Edition of The Secret Of Monkey Island which fits neatly into an RPS post. This doubtless, was their sole intent for it. Expect more games converted to play within RPS posts, starting with Crysis 2 next month.

Monkey Island 2’s Unofficial 3D Treatment

By John Walker on September 21st, 2009.

The potential!

This should put the new fuzzier friendlier LucasArts to the test. Following their remake of Monkey Island, a German modder is seeing how much farther the reinvention of the classic adventures can be taken. He’s recreating Monkey Island 2 in the Cryengine. And it looks very pretty indeed. In fact, it’s astonishing, capturing the original style faithfully, but rendered in 3D. Pics and videos underneath.

Hooray For Piracy: Free’n’Cheap Monkey Isles

By Alec Meer on September 17th, 2009.

It’s Talk Like A Pirate Day on Saturday. If memes ad nauseum wind you up, that may be a good day to take a break from the internet. Unless, however, you’re really into free and cheap point’n’click adventure games. Oh, you’re listening now, aren’t you? Me hearty.

RPS At E3: Returns To Monkey Island

By John Walker on June 9th, 2009.

They now look the same in close up as they do in the main game.

Even a week after the announcement, the news that there’s to be more Monkey Island still seems hard to believe. LucasArts, once an adored development house, has become known in recent years for little other than churning out Star Wars themed products of varying quality. Attempts at new licences during president Jim Ward’s realm failed (possibly in no small part because they very were attempts to create new IP, rather than just damned fine solo games), seeing the company once more fall back into the space flick’s safety net. Last year saw Ward step down, and in April he was replaced by Darrell Rodriguez. A man who, if the murmurs I heard at E3 are true, is genuinely trying to see the company rediscover its roots. Then there’s the news that Telltale are to be making brand new episodic Monkey Island games, with original LucasArts developers on the project. Reimagining the original Monkey Island is an important act for a number of reasons.

LeChuck Me: Monkey Island Returns

By Alec Meer on June 1st, 2009.

Shock! Classic comedy-adventure Monkey Island is coming back – twice. First up, we’ve got a remake of the original Secret of Monkey Island, complete with new graphics and – ooh, controversial – voicework. Then, Telltale (who handled the recent, divisive Sam & Max comeback series) will work with Lucasarts on five new gamettes, to be known as Tales of Monkey Island. Blimey. Hell just froze over, pigs flew, and the pope did his business in the woods. Details and some footage below.

I Am Rubber, You Are Shoe: Monkey Island Sneakers

By Alec Meer on March 20th, 2009.

File under ‘so pointless it’s brilliant’. Via Ron Gilbert (one of the minds behind Monkey Island, and currently working on DeathSpank), one enterprising Spanish LucasArts fan’s DIY The Secret of Monkey Island Converse trainers:

One of a kind, baby. That image of the old guy by the campfire, from MI’s first scene, always throws me back about 15 years whenever I see it. Aw.

But could I, in good conscience, wear these? I suspect not, but I would gladly hang them from a nail on the back of my door. I’m kerrrrrrayyyyzeeee like that.
