Look, Single-Player People Are Just Better

By John Walker on August 1st, 2011.

A man, being superior.

I’m not denying this is territory I’ve covered before. There’s no disguising that I’m a fan of single-playing gaming over multiplayer. Finally it’s time to just say it. We need to stop avoiding the matter, stop not saying what everyone’s thinking. I’m the man brave enough to do this. I am a valiant man, and maybe I won’t be recognised within my own lifetime, but by God one day I shall be heralded as the prophet and man of integrity I truly am. But please, don’t think me immodest. I would hate that.

Valve “Not Giving Up On Single Player At All”

By Quintin Smith on May 9th, 2011.

I hate it when you eat fast-food and can feel it going straight to your eye.

A couple of weeks ago we were speculating on what US journalist Geoff Keighley meant in his iPad-only documentary The Final Hours of Portal 2 (yes, iPad-only) (I DON’T KNOW) when he said…

“Portal 2 will probably be Valve’s last game with an isolated single-player experience… What this all means is something Newell is still trying to figure out.”

Talking of Crytek, they’ve just announced a new game. It’s looking to be aimed at Asian markets, a multiplayer shooter with the eminently shoutable name, Warface. And that’s about all we know just now. It’s in the CryEngine 3, as you might imagine, and if my Chinese is up to scratch, it’s emphasising “positive versus” gaming. I’ve no idea what that means, but I imagine it’s some sort of tactical co-op. The Taiwanese site, GNN, that has the info is here. We picked up on this story from VG247. You can see the two new screenshots in full size by clicking below.

The Trouble With Other People

By John Walker on October 23rd, 2008.

Some other people. Not necessarily awful people. Via Wikimedia Commons.

You’ve probably encountered them, whether in shops, on trains, or perhaps burgling your kitchen. Other people are everywhere, like some sort of uncontrolled disease. Recognisable by their not being you, with their different faces and opinions, they’re exactly the sort of thing that‘s wrong with society. History books show there has never been a war that wasn’t caused or exacerbated by the involvement of other people, and while anecdotal, I’ve yet to get into an argument which didn’t involve at least one other person. And they’re ruining my videogames.
