Waterloot: Napoleon – Total War Free Weekend

By Adam Smith on June 14th, 2012.

If you thought Lost was convoluted just be glad they cancelled the Napoleonic spin-off series. It explained NOTHING

Napoleon: Total War, which was sort of Empire: Total War Strikes Back, is free to download and play on Steam this weekend. If you enjoy yourself you’ll be able to buy it with a 50% discount off the normal pice as well, which is jolly good. The offer lasts until Sunday 17th June 5PM GMT and has started right now, even though it’s not the weekend yet and you most likely still have to go to work tomorrow. You can read what Quinns had to say about the campaign-focused sort-of-sequel over yonder and it’s worth remembering that some modding support was finally added last year. The timing coincides with the anniversary of Waterloo in case you were curious.

To Battle! Empire & Napoleon Made Moddable

By Alec Meer on July 1st, 2011.

Now you can make those hats any colour you fancy

A source of what could gently be called discontent amongst the Total War community of late has been the lack of modding tools for the most recent games. Empire, Napoleon and Total War have all been bereft of official utilities to alter and add units, maps et al, which was partly a result of the relevant files being compressed and thus tricky to edit. At last, the Creative Assembly have found a way to open things up a little more – releasing the complete, original, unpacked raw database XML (data from tables) and XSD (table structure and field properties) files for both Empire and Napoleon.

Huzzah! Hussars! Total Forumitude

By Kieron Gillen on August 9th, 2010.

These could be Hussars. We don't know. Someone ask Tim Stone.

We follow any lead if it’ll take us to a story, including our own comment threads where Creative Assembly’s Craig Laycock writes to say that they’ve launched their new Total War Forum. “I couldn’t/could care less!” depending on what side of the pacific you’re on, you may say. But if you do, says Creative Assembly, you get a personalised War Room where you can see stats from your campaigns, battles, achievements and HOW MANY YOU HAVE KILLED. “Pah!” someone will say, inevitably. All right, says Creative Assembly, if you do, you get a free unit for play in Napoleon. “Is it a Hussar? I love Hussars” says the Hussar fanciers. “It’s the 10th Hussars!” says Creative. “Huzzah! Hussars!” they say, and rush off. “What’s a Hussar?” says John Walker before resuming weeping.

Craig! Mail us next time! In other notes – er – I have a Creative Interview I really should transcribe. Soon! Honest!

I’m The King Of Spain: Peninsular Campaign

By Kieron Gillen on May 25th, 2010.

Heheheheheheheh. He said 'Penis'.

So, the next Campaign for Napoleon: Total War will be in Sunny Spain. Top level features? New 32-region campaign map, a playable Spain and new agents (Priests, Guerrilla and the fancy-underwear-devotees of the Agent Provacteurs). You’ll find the full press-release below, which leaves me just time to say “Napoleon? Short fella, yes?” to wind up the historical purists before I press “Post”. My work here is done.

Even More Total: Free Napoleon DLC

By Alec Meer on March 26th, 2010.

Creative Assembly seem pretty determined to court back all the guys who got a bit antsy with them about the state Empire was released in. Napoleon scrubbed up well, which seems to have upped the good will quotient, and now as an extra thank-you-please-thank-you, they’ve chucked out a free DLC pack for it.

Napoleon: Partial War

By Alec Meer on March 10th, 2010.

Demo! Demo! Demo! Demo of a strategy game! Being a gentleman who tends towards robots and explosions in his real-time strategy games and turn-based in his historical strategy games, I remain a little unclear as to whether Napoleon: Total War is a brand new game, or a cleverly-marketed standalone expansion. Or both. All I know is that Quinns quite liked it. There’s a demo out now via Steam, which means you can ascertain for yourself whether it’s a new age or a repeat of Empire. The AI’s much better, I hear. And it’s important to always mention the AI in any discussion of recent Total War games, apparently. Oh- the demo contains a tutorial and the France vs Prussia Battle of Ligny scenario. Fight!

Napoleon Dynamite: EG Napoleon Review

By Kieron Gillen on February 26th, 2010.

I love this screenshot.

Since we’re probably not doing a Wot I Think, I thought it worthwhile to point everyone in the direction of Boy Wonder Quinns’ Eurogamer review of Napoleon: Total War. Wherein he starts like this…

So, Napoleon finally gave me the battle I wanted from Empire.

And continues in an agreeably histrionic historical vein.

Napoleon: Total Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on February 11th, 2010.

We’ve barely mentioned that the Empire: Total War expandalone Napoleon is almost upon us – but it is! The new campaign will feature three theatres of war, as Mr Napoleon does war in Europe and Egypt as he attempts to expand the French empire. The footage explains that Napoleon is essential to your control of the battlefield, and as a general he boosts the effectiveness of troops on the field. There’s a;sp a look at the other factions – Prussia, Great Britain, and Austria – and some fancy glimpses of the game in motion. It’s looking pretty interesting, assuming you want more in the Empire vein. The game is due out on the 26th of February.

The Year Ahead, Part One

By Jim Rossignol on January 15th, 2010.

Below is the first part of our intricate guide for PC gaming in 2010. There’s a horde of muscular-looking titles on the horizon, many of them likely to stop you and demand your money, like ludological bandits. Meanwhile, others that we expected to land, such The Old Republic, have already fled to 2011. Read on as the clouds in our crystal ball roll back…

A Grander Armée: Napoleon: Total War Announced

By Kieron Gillen on August 19th, 2009.

You can say many things about CA, but they take the best fucking screenshots.

Sadly, there’s no room for a “Aren’t You A Little Short For A Dictator?” gag in the subject line. C’est la vie, as Napoleon might have said with a Gallic flourish. News breaks from the European Land-Mass Videogameisual Show that – as perhaps expected – Creative Assembly are adding using the tiny tyrant as their next step on from Empire: Total War. CA’s interview with IGN is about the only information in the public sphere which isn’t in the press release, their site gubbins or the trailer. You’ll find all of them, for your convenience, beneath the cut.
