Premature Evaluation: Nosgoth

By Marsh Davies on April 6th, 2015.

It’s curious how far back the idea of drinking blood to replenish youth goes, given that we are only just now beginning to understand the benefits of transfusion. Recent research on mice has shown that a transfusion of young blood into an old body can indeed stimulate stem cells and invigorate ailing neurons. But experiments with transferring blood date back centuries, based on the most dubious understandings of science and mostly with disastrous and macabre results.

Each week Marsh Davies sinks his teeth into the hot, pumping artery of Early Access and drains its sweet lifegiving essence, leaving only a ragged skein of flesh when he’s done. This week he’s played (or free-to-played) Nosgoth, a team-based multiplayer game in which heavily-armed non-consenting blood-donors clash with the fanged forces of unlife.

The general mood has been less than charitable towards this project. It’s a multiplayer spin-off of Legacy of Kain, traditionally an action RPG series, a demo of which I think I brushed past on a PC Format coverdisk once, back in the days before games had invented a way to render the male nipple. But, I’m told, it had really good storytelling for the time, and how dare anyone decide to use this important and sophisticated fiction for something so trivial as a thirdperson asymmetric multiplayer game? Yet dare they have. And it seems they’ve made quite a well-considered one, in which deft movement and exact coordination trump headshots and button mashing, and the two teams of which, vampires and humans, offer very different play but surprising parity.

Buddy, You’re A Vampire Slayer: Nosgoth Open Beta Open

By Alec Meer on January 22nd, 2015.

Celebrate good times c'mon

Fighty multiplayer vampire title Nosgoth (official site) has gone even more free to play than it already was. I.e. anyone is now free to play it, as it’s just moved into open beta. I hadn’t really been paying attention to this, because the words ‘Legacy of Kain universe’ cause me to question the purpose of human consciousness, but now I’ve finally had a look at some footage it looks kind of fun. There’s a lot going on – grappling hooks, crossbows, flying dudes…. Don’t know how it hangs together, but it’s a spectacle.

Kain In The Neck: Nosgoth Open Beta Next Week

By Adam Smith on January 14th, 2015.

Nosgoth, as you may remember, is “a solid-looking free-to-play multiplayer shooter set in the Legacy of Kain universe”. A closed beta has been in operation for a good while now and this time next week – that’s Wednesday the 21st, 6pm GMT if you’re reading this in the future – the dark world of Nosgoth will open its doors to everybody. I don’t have any stakes (HAHA) in the Legacy of Kain series, but Nosgoth has my attention because it has humans doing boring human things like capturing points of the map, and vampires hunting and eating them.

Steam Free Weekend-o-rama: Jets vs. Vampires vs. Soldiers

By Alice O'Connor on August 8th, 2014.

Video games!

A trio of free weekend trials on Steam mean that all and sundry can enjoy what are, as I understand, three figures and ideals important to PC gaming: soldiers, vampires, and jetplanes. They all, naturally, do fighting. Not each other, mind–others of their kind. None of these games will let you e.g. pilot a fighter jet battling winged vampires. More’s the pity, really.

Multiplayer futureplane game Strike Vector and realish FPS Insurgency have respectable sales to accompany their free weekend trials, and technically human vs. vamp arenakiller Nosgoth does too but that’ll be free-to-play at launch so it’s less special.

Bane Of Kain: Nosgoth Closed Beta Begins Today

By Nathan Grayson on February 27th, 2014.

I think the bloodsplosion just made him mad

Kain might be off raising, um, someone else in the distant reaches of who-knows-where, but that doesn’t mean his legacy can’t live on. Kinda. Nosgoth is a solid-looking free-to-play multiplayer shooter set in the Legacy of Kain universe, and it offers asymmetrical vampire battling galore. But is it actually coming along well, or is Square Enix just trying to shove a square peg into a Kain-shaped hole? If you’re starved for both souls and information, Nosgoth’s closed beta is about to get up and running. The best news of all? You can join in! Maybe.

Wallet Reaver: Nosgoth’s Pricey Microtransactions

By Nathan Grayson on February 24th, 2014.

Vampire backhands are the meanest backhands

Against all common sense and reason (though not necessarily potential quality when taken on its own merits), Nosgoth is a free-to-play online shooter. Previous Legacy of Kain games, rather pertinently, were not that or anything resembling it. It’s uncharted territory for the vampire-ridden universe of noses and goths, but not so much for the gaming industry these days. So you know what’s coming next: microtransactions. And, as ever, they’re a smidgen bit(e) questionable.

By All Means, Watch This Hour Of Nosgoth Footage

By Craig Pearson on February 10th, 2014.

For those of you who forgot to jack into the “What the hell is Nosgoth?” assimilation pod, here’s a text-based recap: it’s an upcoming free-to-play online shooter set in the Legacy of Kain universe, which suddenly seems like a terrifying look into gaming’s future. It’s currently in closed alpha, but they’ve peeled back the curtains just enough to allow others a glimpse into what I can only describe as a third-person online action game between people and vampires. If you’re keen, there is a whole hour of developer hosted footage to the south.

What Legacy? – Nosgoth’s Beta Will Soon Be Upon Us

By Nathan Grayson on December 19th, 2013.

People have been clamoring for a Legacy of Kain continuation for years now, but I don’t think Nosgoth is exactly what they had in mind. Instead of a story-driven adventurequest, it’s a free-to-play shootything set in some disparate portion of the game’s world. Its fusion of stake-slinging ranged combat and fang-sinking melee could be fantastic, but Square Enix has unintentionally saddled this one with some serious baggage. Will it make everyone happy nonetheless? A beta’s right around the corner, so you’ll be able to gauge the game’s chances soon. For now, though, an alpha trailer’s below.

Free-To-Play Legacy Of Kain, Thy Name Is Nosgoth

By Craig Pearson on September 26th, 2013.

It turns out hearing the name Nosgoth over-and-over-and-over is enough to make me lose it. After the fifth time I heard it spoken in this trailer, I got the the giggles and had to rewatch to get the details. I’m almost embarrassed that I can be so easily amused, but it is a silly word. That second pass gleamed the relevant information, and I watched a third-time to make sure I hadn’t been hearing things the second time: Psyonix has been secretly developing a free-to-play PVP multiplayer action game set in the Legacy Of Kain universe. Human teams will fight Vampires teams. Guh?
