Payday 2: Mo’ Money, Less Problems (Hopefully)

By Alec Meer on March 12th, 2013.

I haven’t played the original Payday, so I asked the current guests at RPS manor to provide an opinion for me. “It was good, but cruelly tough,” claimed Craig Pearson, Scottishly. “It really is Left 4 Dead,” he added, Welshly.

Said Adam: “”
Said John: “”
Said Cara: “”

Therefore my opinion of Payday is that it was good, but cruelly tough. It really was Left 4 Dead. And there’s to be a sequel later this year, with the now Starbreeze-owned Overkill once again on dev duties.

Playday: Payday’s Official Unofficial L4D1 Map Out Now

By Nathan Grayson on July 26th, 2012.

Yes, um, I believe I would like to request a different doctor. No, I know I'm in a coma and this shouldn't be possible. But these guys are *really* wigging me out.

We are suddenly talking about Left 4 Dead a lot again. Could this be a sign of more substantial things to come? I doubt it, but it’s fun to hope for things – so long as you never stop hoping and are incapable of sorrow. Regardless, Payday: The Heist’s much-vaunted reproduction of Left 4 Dead’s Mercy Hospital is here to cure whatever ails you – assuming, of course, that you are made physically ill by the idea that Payday might eventually cease releasing DLC. Go download it! Or read details. These are your only options.

Payday: The Heist Left 4 Dead Map Revealed, Unrevealed

By Nathan Grayson on June 18th, 2012.

Maybe we'll all get cameos!
Well, this is odd. We’ve known about an upcoming Payday: The Heist-Left 4 Dead crossover for about a month now, and – as is often the case with these things – it materialized earlier today via YouTube’s eyebeaming ethers. “”Have you ever wondered how the Left 4 Dead series began?” the video’s description asked, forcing me to realize that I’ve never actually wondered that. “It started with a heist!” Intrigued, the Internet looked on as Payday’s band of mask-loving hooligans shot its way through a very un-zombified version of Left 4 Dead’s Mercy Hospital. And then the trailer disappeared.

Happily, Eurogamer managed to upload a roll to its own Internet-powered projector machine, so you can still watch the trailer and remember it as it was before its mysterious disappearance. Perhaps Valve and Overkill (now known collectively as Valverkill) stole it. From themselves. This may just be a heist caper for the ages. I, however, will work tirelessly to get to the bottom of it: Oh look, here’s the answer. It’s just a Left 4 Dead cameo (character and hospital setting) in a Payday map.

Hooray! Sort of, eh?

Super Team-Up! The Left 4 Dead / Payday Crossover

By Alec Meer on May 21st, 2012.

Man, it seems like half a decade ago that we were getting all scared by the Witch. Oh wait, it was. I AM SO OLD

Seems a trifle odd to be saying this given 2009’s foremost angry internet man-generator was the perceived too-soon release of a sequel to Left 4 Dead, but Valve’s zombathons seem to me to have been left a little fallow of late. Team Fortress 2’s ongoing transformation into QVC, Portal 2’s awards-hogging and fever-pitch speculation about Half Life has been the order of the day for the last couple of years. You could – aheh- say that Left 4 Dead has been – aheh – left for dead. Aheh-heh-heh. Just my little joke, there.

Something is suddenly stirring, however (editor’s note – I really need more elegant alternatives to ‘however’ and ‘though’, which I know full well are often seen to be cludgy writing. Suggestions?), and it comes not from Valve, but from Payday: The Heist devs and recent Starbreeze acquisition Overkill.

Starbreeze Smash And Grab PayDay Devs

By Adam Smith on April 19th, 2012.

A: We'll be your publisher from here on in. B: Yes. Quite.

I think it’s more of a polite corporate takeover (IF SUCH A THING EXISTS) than a masked, gun-toting robbery, but the fact remains that Syndicate Riddick developer Starbreeze is awaiting shareholder approval as it bids to buy Overkill Software, they of PayDay: The Heist. If it all goes ahead, Overkill shall continue enhancements of the first game while also working on a sequel, which must feature supernatural elements and go by the name HeistGeist. Starbreeze have plenty in development already, with three internal teams working on three separate games, including “free-to-playish” Cold Mercury, the self-funded P13 and one other mystery title.

Prepare For A Stolen Weekend: Heist Is Free On Steam

By Craig Pearson on March 2nd, 2012.

They're frowning on the inside
Ooh, I’m in PSA mode: bank-robbing FPS PayDay:The Heist is free on Steam this weekend, and 50% off if you choose to buy it. Dan Gril loved it, and I concur that it’s an excellent mash-up of gaming and film influences: everything from the opening sequence of The Dark Knight to Heat is mined and tossed into a Left 4 Deadish co-op run and gun. It’s kind of the perfect weekend game, if your idea of the perfect weekend is shooting policemen and being able to get to sleep at night afterwards. And if you’re not planning to play this, why not tell us what you are up to that’s so important that you can afford to ignore a free game? It better be damn good.

Wot I Think: Payday: The Heist

By Dan Grill on November 14th, 2011.

Robbing banks is so 20th century. In the 21st century they rob you.
The heist genre seems to have been arrested before it even got going: Subversion is serving a ten-year stretch as the new Prison Tycoon; Monaco’s team is keeping its head down and hoping for an early release. Only Payday: The Heist is at large, having stolen the nascent heist genre blueprints from under their noses. Here’s Wot I Think.

Hands On: PAYDAY: The Heist

By Dan Grill on September 13th, 2011.

Noogies are the worst form of crime.

We forced Dan Gril to wear a clown mask, break into Sony’s HQ, and hold everyone up until they gave us information on Overkill Software’s heist-them-up, Payday. Read on to find out all about the life of crime that awaits.

Daylight Robbery: Payday The Heist Screens

By John Walker on July 14th, 2011.

Just like Bruce Willis in Bandits.

Payday: The Heist, as Quintin pointed out, looks like it should be a stealth-based bank robbing game, but is in fact a full-on murder-em-up. It’s Left 4 Dead, except they’re not dead until you show up. Which is an angle on bank robbery you don’t often see. Take a look at some of those angles in the screenshot gallery below.

PayDay: The Heist Is A Game About Robbery

By Quintin Smith on June 9th, 2011.

'Now, wave 'em around like you just don't care.'

How would you like to play Left 4 Dead, only instead of killing zombies you’re killing a building robbing a building? Do you think that’s something you’d enjoy?

That’s what download-only multiplayer FPS PayDay: The Heist is going to offer. This game’s name surfaced about a week back, but now we have a debut trailer and footage of some people playing the game at E3. It’s all after the jump.
