Space Odyssey: Maia Gets Big Bug Bashing Update

Simon Roth’s sci-fi survival game Maia [official site] has been in deep development for a while now – the last time we mentioned it was 2014 and it had already been in Early Access for the better part of a year. Roth has continued toiling away at his Dungeon Keeper In Space, releasing videos now and again of its status.

For those counting at home, we are now up to Update 0.50. It’s a doozy – among other things it takes a giant whack at critical gameplay issues.

Afro Samurai 2: Episode One Launches This Month With More Creepy Bears

The first of three episodes of Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma [official site], telling the story of a robot samurai with the face of a bear from your nightmares, is coming to Windows on September 22nd.

A spin-off of Takashi Okazaki’s original manga, Revenge of Kuma follows the antics of the cybernetic bear dude Kuma, who at one point was a human guy and best friend to the titular Afro Samurai. Kuma – who, confusingly, is also known as Jinno – is now after poor Afro to avenge the death of his adopted little sister. Look, it makes sense if you played the first game.

Wot I Think: FIFA 15

FIFA is a game you play co-operatively with your computer.

This is true of any game, of course; there is no play without the computer’s reaction to your inputs. But FIFA requires that you steer eleven footballers in real-time around a pitch you can see less than a third of at any given moment. To make that possible, you’re reliant on the computer to take hold of whoever you’re not directly controlling. You’re reliant on the game to correctly infer your intent as you wrestle with umpteen buttons and twin analogue sticks.

In the space between those two outcomes – intent and action – is where FIFA happens. Everything that’s good or bad about the game exists in that ambiguity. It’s why I love and hate FIFA 15 for all the same reasons I’ve loved and hated the last four iterations.

Valve: PS3 And PC Crossplay Is CS: GONE

You hold them off while I go potty.
The initial announcement of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive gave us the hope that we could all get along; that you there with your hand-build Intel i7 rig could be playing with a friend who might be sat on his sofa, starting at his giant television, holding a joypad. I wanted that, you (maybe?) wanted that, Valve initially wanted that. Now Valve do not want that. Speaking to Joystiq, Chet Faliszek told them it was because they need to frequently update the PC and Mac versions more frequently.

The beta has proved we want to update not just the beta, but the game itself post-launch frequently on the PC. To do that we need to separate the platforms so one doesn’t hamstring the other. So for that, we have removed the idea of cross-platform play — essentially make all platforms stronger by not mixing them.
