Insane In The Membrane? Cell: emergence

By John Walker on February 1st, 2012.

This is in your tummy RIGHT NOW.

You may remember that a few months back we told you about Cell: emergence, the extremely peculiar-looking game from Deus Ex writer Sheldon Pacotti’s indie team, New Life Interactive. The fantastic voyage is a pixelly exploration of cellular defense, that looks equal parts fascinating and bemusing. Referencing classic games like Defender and Missile Command, and alluding to RTS themes, the experimental project asks you to protect a membrane via manipulation of the medicinal voxels. I’d suggest that watching the video below might explain things better, but I’m fairly sure I know less about the game having watched it. It’s something we need to play to get our heads around, and the good news is it’s out on the 9th Feb, via GamersGate, Impulse, Green Man Gaming, Playism and Desura. And there will be a demo on Tuesday.

Gotham City Impostors Arrives In January

By John Walker on November 10th, 2011.

Tsk, why release so few if you're going to take such little care?

Gotham City Impostors, the other Batman game, has a release date. It’s the 10th January 2012, which sounds like it’s a hundred years in the future, but is in fact in exactly two months.

This is the sort-of-like-TF2-a-bit online shooter from Monolithic, who suddenly remembered they’re at their best when having fun, rather than being all gloomy and serious. Will we be having fun with this? We’ve no idea yet, because we haven’t played it. But there will be opportunities to do so, probably from December when the beta is “expected” to go live. To celebrate there’s a new sreenshot, which is, er, poorly taken. You can see the full size version by clicking on the pic above, and leave your screenshot-taking guides for not leaving the centre of the image mostly empty below.

Releasario: Lego Harry Potter 2 Out In Nov

By John Walker on September 20th, 2011.

Stupid wizard idiot.

Something I still haven’t done, that I was originally planning before Christmas, is to write a WIT for Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4. I know that sounds like a strange game to review long after it came out, and perhaps not quite in the target audience for RPS, but blimey, it’s a brilliant game. Certainly I’m a sucker for Traveller’s Tales’ Lego games, but not without an eye for quality. Lego Star Wars: great. Lego Indy: poop. And as it happens, I can’t stand Harry Potter. But Lego Harry Potter was a level above all the others, not only nailing the regularly repeated formula exactly, but also framing itself very differently. One day I’ll write it, and probably call it a “retro”. Indeed, I could time it with the release of the next game in the series, Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7, which Warner has just announced for the 18th November this year. Which is splendid news, even for a boy-wizard-hating git like me.

A Date For A Game Of A Game Of Thrones

By John Walker on September 7th, 2011.

I'm not going to chop you. I'm going to chat for 390 hours about my pet dog.

Cyanide’s A Game Of Thrones: Genesis finally has a release date. The RTS set in George R. R. R. R. R. Martin’s grumpy world will be with us this very month, on the 29th. Being a strategy game, clearly I’d have to receive an odd number of bumps to the head to play it, but were I to I would insist on only ever making honourable decisions, no matter how frequently this led to my entire family getting enslaved and murdered and everyone’s heads getting chopped off. Because Boromir says that’s how it should be. Which interestingly is almost something the game offers. You can see some new screenshots below, too.

Magicka Released Date Confirmed, Eek! Soon!

By John Walker on January 21st, 2011.

Aw, cute little murderers.

Release dates are not a natural source of comedy. There’s a limited number of jokes you can really get out of such a mundane piece of news. I mean, I even struggled below with the DNF announcement. Although believe me, if I ever get anyone pregnant I’ll be making “release date” jokes for nine solid months. Gosh, it will be so funny. “It’s due for Q3 2013.” “We’re pushing to meet the deadline, going into beta now.” “It’s gone gold!” “Oh, wait, it looks like the baby’s slipped into next week.” “OUT NOW!”

This is not helping in communicating the news to you that Magicka, the dungeon-crawling, spell-casting action RPG from Paradox will be out on the 25th January. Why, that’s in four days! Big Download bring us that news with their Exclusive Hat firmly wedged on their heads. We’ll have a review of the game pretty damned soon too, and I’ve put that funny video from last year below, because I’m nice like that.

DNF Release Date, Snakes Rise From Graves

By John Walker on January 21st, 2011.

Surrrrrrrrrrrrrre.
UPDATE: Launch trailer added below! Watch it. [Eh, watching Duke Nukem trailers, that's a weird one, isn't it? -Jim]

See, even though this is real, I still don’t believe it. Your partner can’t cheat on you, lie to you, never be there for you for so many years, and then just turn over a new leaf. Who cares what’s changed? I just refuse to accept that it will happen. I can’t allow myself to be hurt again. Eurogamer report the date for a Duke Nukem Forever release date, quoting a site I daren’t link to any longer (and more because it’s bloody well playing music at me when I open it, with no obvious off switch.) It’s going to be the 3rd May for the USA, and the 6th for the rest of the world. Yeah, right, whatever.

Borderlands Release Date Set: 23rd October

By John Walker on July 22nd, 2009.

You know how often it goes like this? “Super-Exciting Game IV was due to be released for PC in three months, but publishers Idiotsoft have announced it’s now to be exclusive for Dreamcast and not released in the UK until the new millennium.” So when it doesn’t, I think it’s worth noticing. 2K have announced a release date for Borderlands, 23rd October for Europe, and three days earlier in the US. This year. Despite other games coming out in the run up to Christmas. 2K told Gamespot they aren’t afraid of a little competition.

To find out why to be excited about Borderlands check out our E3 preview.

Make A Date With World Of Goo – Update

By John Walker on October 3rd, 2008.

How apt.

World Of Goo has a release date, both on Wiiware (in the US – it’s getting a retail release in Europe, apparently), and PC. That date is: 13th October. So less than two weeks. Oh boy!

2D Boy have confirmed for us that those who pre-ordered the game will be getting their copies as soon as this Monday. Kyle Gabler told us,

“We’re going to start sending out PC copies of the game to people who pre-ordered this Monday, October 6. Pre-orderers will also have access to Mac and and Linux copies, but those builds are not ready yet, only the Windows version for now.”
