Hands On: Company Of Heroes 2

By Adam Smith on August 23rd, 2012.

At Gamescom, Relic gave me an article of clothing that says “I survived the Eastern Front” across the back in striking red letters. Considering I barely survived a stroll down the Brighton sea front a couple of months back because there was a bit of rain, it seems inappropriate for me to wear such a statement. I also lost to the AI during a skirmish game of Company of Heroes 2, my blood become ice, but that’s because I wasn’t really trying to win. Here’s what I was doing instead.

We’ve Got Company Of Heroes 2 Screenshots

By Nathan Grayson on June 30th, 2012.

Remember how excited you were when we got two whole Company of Heroes 2 screenshots a couple days ago? Well, prepare to be roughly that excited again, because now we’ve got another two. That’s still two more frames of actual gameplay than we got from spending time in the company of yesterday’s trailer, though, so my anger tank can only fire so many shells. Regular tanks, however, can fire so many shells, as evidenced by the screenshots. And that makes me happy, only reducing the effectiveness of my wimpy rage cannons even more. Check out the other screenshot after the break for more madcap, happysadcap, rad backward cap action.

First Company Of Heroes 2 Trailer Sets Stage, Leaves

By Nathan Grayson on June 29th, 2012.

Do you see what you just did, World War II? Now go to your room. Go on, get!
I will forever be baffled by the trend of game trailers that opt to keep, you know, games almost entirely out of the spotlight. Next, I would like a film preview made up entirely of adorable puppy photos from this magical place and a book whose words are printed in alphabet soup instead of ink. Until then, though, I’ll have to make do with war. World War II, specifically – a sequel in which we did, in fact, war harder. Right up until near the end, Company of Heroes 2′s first official trailer is stitched together from old photos, dramatic cuts, and (admittedly jaw-dropping) statistics. It’s nice and all, but perhaps we can see a bit more of Relic’s not-too-shabby-looking game next time?

War Of The Non-Human Tanks: Company of Heroes 2

By Alec Meer on June 26th, 2012.

Today is tank day! I’ve just decided. And now I probably won’t find any other tank games to post about. Oh well.

I’ll confess that THQ’s ongoing money-woes have me fearing for the security of some much-anticipated videogames (and the good folk who make ‘em), most especially Metro: Last Light and Company of Heroes 2. Hopefully Relic and 4A are ring-fenced from the cuts’n'terror at the besieged publisher, and the release of some new pictures of the former’s Eastern Front battle still my palpitations somewhat.

Cold Front: Company Of Heroes Interview, Pt 2

By Adam Smith on June 5th, 2012.

Continuing a mammoth discussion about Company of Heroes 2 with Quinn Duffy (game director), Greg Wilson (producer) and Matthew Berger (senior gameplay designer), this time around we consider the future of the series, despite the sequel not being out until next year. Once that’s out of the way, it’s time to discuss more of the research that went into COH2 and to reflect on Homeworld.

Eastern Promises: Company Of Heroes 2 Interview

By Adam Smith on June 4th, 2012.

After being shown a demo of Company of Heroes 2 at Relic’s headquarters, we took the opportunity to sit down with game director Quinn Duffy, producer Greg Wilson and senior gameplay designer Matthew Berger, to find out more about what they have planned for the sequel. Then we talked about history, finding heroism in horror and brutality, and how too much balance can harm a game’s other qualities.

First Look: Company Of Heroes 2

By Adam Smith on May 22nd, 2012.

Looking back, I should have known it would be the Eastern Front. The entire world may well know by now that Company of Heroes 2 is in development at Relic, due for release sometime in 2013, and if they’ve paid any attention whatsoever they’ll also be aware that it’s set on the Eastern Front with a campaign beginning in 1941. What they don’t know is that we are among the few outside the studio who’ve already seen the game in action and right up until we entered the briefing room, we had no idea when or where it was set.

Warhammer 40k Dark Millennium No Longer An MMO

By Jim Rossignol on March 29th, 2012.

Eurogamer has news that THQ’s MMO project, Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online, has been refocused as a single-player and multi-player online game. The game had previously been rumoured to be cancelled. THQ boss Brian Ferrell said: “Based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features.” Around 120 people across the Relic and Vigil studios have been laid off as a result of the change, which is depressing news. Hopefully we’ll firm up exactly what sort of game we’re left soon. A 40k RPG with online bits? Could be… And that would be okay by me.

Headline With A ?: Company of Heroes Sequel?

By Alec Meer on December 20th, 2011.

'that's what we do to rumour-reporters'

Could it really be that Relic are at last working on some manner of follow-up to their very well-received and very well-realised World War II RTS Company of Heroes? It could, claims PC Gamer’s print edition, claims Kotaku, claims VG247. I cannot verify this, but on this slowest of slow news days I shall report it nonetheless. There are no details because this is mere rumour, but though PCG are in the habit of eating live babies they aren’t generally in the habit of being scurrilous, so let’s hope they’re on the money here.

The Tau Join Dawn of War 2 , Sorta

By Alec Meer on October 17th, 2011.

The Tau are my least favourite of the 40k races. THERE I SAID IT.
Hopefully there’ll be a third expansion for Relic’s largely (but not solely) fantastigood Dawn of War II, and the usual clutch of new factions and units, but in the meantime a lone Tau unit has snuck into the current version of the game. Specifically, into the Last Stand survival co-op mode, wherein you pick a suitably 40Kian hero and attempt to survive as long as you can.

Controlling the suitably battlesuited Tau Commander in Last Stand will require a small payment of additional money – someone should totally invent a word to describe that – but is available in both the full version of DOW2: Retribution (but not just the base game, as far as I can ascertain) and the cheapy Last Standalone spin-off. Due out at the end of October, and in-action in moving pixel-based form below.

Space Marine’s Exterminatus Co-Op Dated

By Jim Rossignol on October 7th, 2011.

Relic’s mildly disappointing orc-eviscerating game Space Marine is getting a 4-player co-op mode later this month, with THQ dating the roll out of the free upgrade for the 25th. It’s called EXTERMINATUS. Which, quite coincidentally, is my middle name. There will be two scenarios in this mini-expansion, in which you can play as tactical marines, heavy-weaponised devastators or whoosh-bam marines. You’ll be fighting orcs and chaos, according to EG.

Nor will this be the end of DLC for the game, say Relic, with paid and free additions to come.

‘Snot Green: Repaint Your Space Marine

By Alec Meer on September 12th, 2011.

Red vs blue? Red wins.

Ticked off that you’re stuck in the boring blue power-armour of a boring blue Ultramarine in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine‘s singleplayer campaign? While you can’t stop Captain Titus from banging on about his Chapter, thanks to one modder’s hard work you can now make him look like he belongs to another, less vanilla entry in the Codex Astartes. Newly added to the mod, at last, are helmets – so you can look like a proper Space Marine, not the 40K equivalent of that bloody Stallone Judge Dredd movie.
