D/Generation To Return! An HD Remake On The Way

By John Walker on September 9th, 2014.

I’m not saying I cause all the good things in the world. I leave it to others to accurately observe this. So it will have to be someone else who gives me my deserved credit for the exciting news that West Coast Software has gained the license to remake D/Generation. I mean, I mentioned it only three weeks ago on RPS, as an example of a game people have forgotten about but that brings a wave of joyful nostalgia when recalled. And now, well, I’m just saying. Big thanks to Retro Gamer for the spot.

What The Duck: More Unnecessary 8-Bit Retromancy

By Alec Meer on June 6th, 2013.

Might solve a mystery?

Look here, I liked Duck Tales – cartoon and game alike – well enough when I were a lad, but do we really need to pillage every last dusty coin from the tomb of ancient videogaming? Disney’s already having the Castle of Illusion remade in spangle-vision, and now another anthropomorphic animal platformer is getting tarted up and resold to people who can remember when all this were fields. Previously only announced for the toyboxes, we now hear that Capcom will also be releasing Duck Tales: Higher Resolution Version on PC, which I guess is good news if you’re one of those who can’t stop fiddling with your nostalgia glans. Have a look, and a singalong, below.

Voulez-Vous Un Remake De Flashback?

By Alec Meer on January 22nd, 2013.

Cloud Saves: Final Fantasy VII Returns To PC

By Craig Pearson on August 14th, 2012.

It already happened once, but that didn’t stop Square Enix from doing it again and releasing Final Fantasy VII on the PC. Unlike the majority off re-releases, there’s not even a hint of HD about this return to the most beloved game JRPG of the PlayStation 1 generation. So what gives?

From Bright Skies: Dark Reign Redux

By Adam Smith on February 2nd, 2012.

REDUXED

Back in 1997, there was a strategy game released that went by the name of Dark Reign. I’m fairly sure I played the demo but I can’t be certain because I just played the demo again and drew a blank. The reason I’m playing the demo is that it’s just been re-released, remade even, to run through Silverlight as Dark Reign Redux. The demo is available now, with a full release on its way at an undetermined price. The XBLArgh version is priced at 400 Microbucks, which is around £3.50 by my reckoning. Perhaps you wish to try the demo? Here it is, with a 120MB install size. Back in ’97, Dark Reign came on 16,521 floppies.

Rene-made: Fan-Created C&C FPS Spawns

By Craig Pearson on January 30th, 2012.

What's the developer's favourite actor? Orlando BLOOM! LOLOLOL!
Renegade-X is a reworking of the original, awful Command & Conquer: Renegade, Westwood’s ambitious FPS with RTS acne. I’m downloading the just released short single-player preview, “Operation Black Dawn”, from the official torrent, and we’ll make brain thinks into words about its UDK-based goodness another day. In the meantime, here’s the download link and video, strategically placed below.

Half-Life Dreamcast Gets A PC Port

By Craig Pearson on January 19th, 2012.

Spaaaace hugs!

Way back in the year 2000 I had a very brief stint on Dreamcast magazine, DC-UK. I won’t bore you with the details of my quick departure: just imagine the most dramatic escape scene you can, then double it. But while I was there I happened across a preview disc with Half-Life on it. I say preview, the damn thing was nearly complete and I played a tonne of it on that bizarre controller. It was cancelled. As is the way of these things, the code found it’s way onto The Google and now someone’s ported it to the PC.

Cock A Hoot: Leisure Suit Larry HD

By John Walker on October 11th, 2011.

I miss the square face.

As Andrew mentions below, HD remakes serve to make games look like your rose-tinted, 1920×1080 memories of them. Trying to play through the original MDK2 now is a tough feat, so having it remade for modern, hi-def eyes is a splendid thing. But the original Leisure Suit Larry? That looks like a pile of pixels even in my most optimistic memory. EGM are reporting that Replay Games and Larry creator Al Lowe have the rights to the games and plan to give them new life. As well as start on some new adventures.
