I tried to play Wildstar at Rezzed, which had the least pushy crowds of any convention I’ve been at. Nevertheless, I didn’t manage to get onto the bank of PCs. The players there were curled over the keyboards in the manner of a lion protecting a delicious carcass. I’d approach, there’d be a low growl that I first felt then heard, then my throat would be casually swiped from my neck and the player would return to Carbine’s world. Thankfully the Surgeon Simulator booth was pretty close, and a quick graft restored my larynx. But the Wildstar players did seem particularly engrossed. A less slashy environment to experience the game was the Rezzed developer session, which I’ve embedded below.

RPS Feature Devils and Details
At the first Rezzed, a year ago, I saw Maia for the first time. Back then, before the nail-biting Kickstarter campaign, what I was shown was more engine than game, an almost frighteningly impressive technical achievement, created by one person and almost tentatively shown to a few eager onlookers. A couple of days ago, I saw the game again. It isn’t finished but it was one of the most intriguing propositions at a show packed with variety.
Along with all of the lovely exhibitors and visitors at Rezzed, the crowd contained every current member of RPS, although one of our number did have to leave in order to care for his offspring. But still we gathered, a band of six, and spoke of what we had seen. Below you will find the Rezzed Shotcast featuring Adam Smith, Cara Ellison, Craig Pearson, Jim Rossignol, John Walker and Nathan Grayson, with discussion of Hotline Miami 2, Sir, You Are Being Hunted, Rome: Total War 2, Gone Home, Revenge of the Sunfish, gaming’s best doors, the first digital willy and much, much more.
So it turns out a big bunch of the RPS Giraffe-based Planetside 2 outfit are here at Rezzed, and tomorrow they’re all going to be playing the game from the show from 1pm. We need you to come and fight with an against them, as onlookers gawp at their plasma-toting prowess. Jump in tomorrow afternoon and give them hell/heals.
A last-minute addition to the Rezzed 2013 line-up will be my current favourite game, Planetside 2! I’m sure there will be plenty of our determined PS2 players there, and if you haven’t tried it yet, you’ll be able to sit down and have a go. We also have word that the developer sessions, which include things such as Chris Avellone mud-wrestling with Ragnar Tornquist (I can dream), will be streamed online via the Eurogamer YouTube channel. So even if you can’t make it, you can feel like you are (in some weird, solitary way) part of the party.
Speaking of parties – Rezzed attendees please note Saturday night drinks. See you there.
Also playable: Total War: Rome II, Space Hulk, Sir, You Are Being Hunted, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Gone Home, Redshirt, Caribbean!, Democracy 3, Gun Monkeys, and much more. You should come along.
Makers of retro arcadian pixels of joy, Puppygames, send word that they are running a hi-score competition at Rezzed 2013. (That’s this weekend at the NEC in Birmingham.) If you win, you get a Nexus 7. Nice! They explain: “Under our baleful glare, hapless punters who attempt to creep past our booth unnoticed will be captured and enslaved in front of one of our games and made to play for hiscores. Whomsoever has the highest score in each game at the end of Rezzed is going to win a Nexus 7, so we’ll also be extracting contact details out of anyone who gets the #1 hiscore. Those left mentally unscarred and unruffled by the experience may wish to come back later to defend their scores if they want to be in with a chance of winning.” But there’s more! “Just in case you’re inept at blasting aliens and robots to bits but would like the opportunity to try more, we’re also giving away all our games for free to anyone who drops by.”
As if there weren’t already enough reasons to visit this year’s Rezzed (in only a week’s time!), I’m really thrilled about two developer sessions I’ll be hosting. And even more thrilled about who will be on those panels. With game-creating gurus Chris Avellone and Ragnar Tørnquist appearing on both, you’d be a fruitcake not to come along.
We’re only eight sleeps away from Rezzed 2013 at the NEC, and we can announced that Carbine’s Wildstar, the space-frontier MMO, will be playable on the show floor! The developer sessions have been finalised, too, with our own John Walker running panels at 12 on both days, and Hotline Miami vs Luftrausers on Sunday. Sunday will also feature the Day Z Standalone and Wildstar developer sessions.
Looks like this will have the same awesome chilled atmosphere as last year, with a boardgame arena for you sit down and play Star Wars: X-Wing, Carcassonne, and other classics. (If you’ve not played X-Wing yet, then get in line for that, it’s fantastic.)
The world’s foremost PC gaming gathering, Rezzed 2013, is not far away now, and announcements are still arriving on our desk like memos in a 1950s newspaper office montage. The latest is that Total War makers The Creative Assembly are sponsoring the prizes for our gamejam, which will be taking place all day on the 22nd. The jam is open to four-person teams, and the results of these team’s work will be judged by the Guardian’s Keith Stuart, Obsidian’s Chris Avellone, and Splash Damage’s Ed Stern.
Teams hoping to jam should email us by 14th June with a team name and details of those who want to take part. The Rezzed chaps will notify teams being invited to take part as soon as possible.
The Creative Assembly are going to pick the theme. But what should it be?
