Rise And Stream: Watch Us Chatter Over (Ugh) Rambo

That is one very shiny man

So I think I’m going to make this Friday night/Saturday morning (depending on your timezone) stream a regular thing. And what better way to christen an official feature than by cursing the name of every major deity and wishing I had never been born? Rambo: The Video Game is not very good. Playing it will likely be An Ordeal. And so, for some reason, Hayden Dingman from PCWorld (who is temporarily living on my floor because I AM SUCH A GOOD PERSON) and I have elected to play it for your amusement/schadenfreude. Prepare to watch us curse through QTEs, bungle forced stealth sections, and generally rage against our machines. The stream will kick off at 9 PM PT/5 AM GMT. It will go until we remember that we are young and still have so much left to live for. Tune in below.

Update: Aaaaaaaaand we’re done! You can watch a recording of the whole thing below.

You Scream, I Scream, RPS Streams: Titanfall

I am hoping to kick off a more regular streaming schedule (with RPS staffers who are not me sometimes, no less!) soon, but for now, BOOM CRASH WHAM: random Titanfall stream while many of you are, in all likelihood, asleep. It’s still Valentine’s Day here in the good ol’ US of That One Place I Claim To Be From, and both I and Hayden Dingman of PCWorld are painfully alone. Thus, what better way to spend an otherwise existentially uncomfortable evening than by drowning our sorrows in some sensual mechanized massacre? Don’t answer that. Anyway, on with the show. We’ll be kicking off at 10 PM PT/6 AM GMT. We would’ve started far sooner, but Titanfall’s servers have been down pretty much all day. Better in beta than after, I suppose.

And we’re done! You can watch a recording of the full thing below.

The Global Game Jam Mega-Stream

here is a duck with a cell phone in outer space

I am trapped in a hotel room in San Diego, waiting for one of them ding dang dern vidya game events to start. This would be probably the darkest moment ever faced by any member of the human race if not for the fact that Global Game Jam happened this weekend, giving me thousands – yes, thousands – of crazy unique (or just plain crazy) indie game experiments to try out. The theme for this bout of technomagical mad science? “We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” Developers were free to interpret that quote as they saw fit, which resulted in everything from surprisingly poignant duck sims to Godzilla QWOP to arsonic fever dreams of SETTING EVERYTHING ON FIRE. I plan on playing until I run out of games or get bored or something.

I’ll kick off at 3:00 PM PT/11:00 PM GMT. Also, please excuse the likely bouts of lag and other such unpleasantry. I’m playing on a fairly abysmal Internet connection, so it’ll probably be a bit inconsistent. Oh, and occasional game switches might take the stream offline for a moment or two, so be aware of that as well. Watch below.

Update: Aaaaaand done! Due to connection troubles and other miscellaneous issues, I had to scrap a fair bit of video. But I did write up all the games we played and add video where possible. That’s below, for your reading/viewing pleasure.

A Game And A Chat Ep 2: Jason Rohrer

Jason Rohrer isn’t like other game designers. He isn’t really like them at all. From his early days eschewing videogame norms to make a game about the inevitably of death and loss in Passage to cooperative storytelling intrigue-o-tron Sleep Is Death to wild (and controversial) Minecraft “religious” experiment Chain World, Rohrer’s games aren’t escapism. They often make people uncomfortable. They often make him uncomfortable. The Castle Doctrine, then, might just be his most unsettling interactive experience yet. It’s about breaking, entering, stealing, murdering, and defending your virtual family from other players doing the same. As with Rohrer’s other games, it stems from deeply personal experiences, and we’re going to talk about that, the sensitive nature of many topics portrayed in his game, paranoia, gun ownership, game sales, and tons more. This one might be a bit more, er, heavy than the chat with Tim Schafer. But it should be incredibly fascinating as well. Join us live after the break, starting at 11:00 AM PT/7:00 PM GMT. And if you’d like, click over to my Twitch page and hop into the live chat. Discuss! Ask us things!

Update: We’re done! You can watch the whole thing below.
