Wot I Think: Postal III

By Alec Meer on January 26th, 2012.

I’ve been playing the oddly quietly-released latest third person action’n’ urban psychopathy game from Running With Scissors, Postal III. Needless to say, I wish I hadn’t.

I have a large tumbler full of Scotch (I know, I know, you’re supposed to use a tulip-shaped glass for the full effect, but the only Scottish person currently writing for RPS is Craig and he says “it offends me” of whisky, so I think I’m safe). I have a vaguely misanthropic attitude towards life, the universe and everything. I have a deep distrust of conventional employment. I have a low attention span. Oh look, there’s a magpie outside. It’s all black and white and… oh yes. And I have a copy of Postal III installed on my personal computer. I AM READY.

The Postal III Trailer Is Interesting

By Jim Rossignol on June 6th, 2011.

Yes.
I originally typo’d “Portal 3 trailer”. Imagine if this was the Portal 3 trailer.

It’s the Postal III trailer. NSFW.

Postal III: New Footage, Little Controversy

By John Walker on August 18th, 2010.

No new screenshots in three years. Sigh.

Postal III has been a touch delayed. In development since before 2006, we first mentioned it in 2008 when it was revealed it would include a badger as a gun. A couple of months later, during 2008′s Leipzig, the most remarkable video of footage was released, with the developer apparently not too impressed with his own game. Jump forward another year, March 2009, and we had a new trailer showing some third-person action. Yet another year goes past, little is heard, and that brings us to now. Two new trailers have been released, and they are of course below.

Badgering Us: Postal III Trailer

By John Walker on March 25th, 2009.

I've never trusted badgers.

I feel terrible breaking the relaxing silence with this, but here’s some new game footage of Postal III. Fire, shooting and badgers. And it’s got some awfully raucous music on it, you know the sort, all shouting and banging and you can’t make out the words. It’s beneath.

Postal III – Even The Devs Don’t Seem Impressed

By John Walker on August 21st, 2008.

BADGER GUN! HA HA HA HA HA! Sorry guys, shark gun beat you to it, by years.

This is pretty odd. Running With Scissors gave their “world exclusive” demo of the prison breakout mission from Postal III (NSFW) at Leipzig today, but with what appears to be some sort of contempt for their own game. In the video below you can see the game running, with a peculiarly frat-boy like commentary from RWS’ Mike J.

Postal III: Badger In Action

By Jim Rossignol on July 23rd, 2008.

Weapons that you have to feed seem to be something of a theme this week. Here’s the trailer for politically dubious murdersim, Postal III, in which the dev team (Running With Scissors) show off the use of their angry-badger weapon.

Postal Movie Date Announced, Denounced

By John Walker on March 11th, 2008.

It takes a lot to offend RPS. You say you slept with our mothers, we’ll suggest you visit the STD clinic. So it’s unlikely you’ll see any of us standing outside cinemas at the release of Uwe Boll’s Postal this 23rd May, waving placards campaigning against whatever crap the new millennium’s Ed Wood has cooked up. Where you can offend us is by being rubbish. Based on these criteria, it’s safe to say Boll has upset us on numerous occasions.

Dave Foley! WHY?!

So it’s surprising that Postal devs, Running With Scissors (be warned: NSFW), are enthusiastic about the Postal movie. Well, surprising until you realise that RWS’ CEO, Vince Desi, stars in the film. Desi and Boll comment below.

Endless Escapism

By Kieron Gillen on October 16th, 2007.

We don’t link enough to occasional Corporate Paymasters The Escapist, I think. Let’s put that right, as their new issue has a few interviews which are of obvious interest to RPS-heads. Firstly, the have an interview profile on Tim “Grim Fandango/Psychonauts/Walker’s Future Bride” Schafer, where he deals with his decision to leave Lucasarts, start Doublefine and general tribulations. Here’s a quote where he talks about “creative” being used as a curse…

“People would just kinda be like, ‘Oh, it’s very creative.’ And it really seemed like the more you could make your game seem more like something else or more derivative of something else, the more comfortable they would be with it.”

We’ve also got interview profiles with the Sports Interactive guys on their original-Championship Manager/Football Manager dynasty and Running With Scissors about their vomit, sex and death Postal dynasty. And, if you had to choose to read but one feature… you know, I think I’d recommend the Postal one. We’re very aware of the creativity/money problem Schafer elaborates on, but to have Running With Scissors drop the comedy sex-monsters mask and actually argue their artistic corner with quotes like…

If we were in this for the money, then we would have made Doom 48, Unreal 57, Halo 99. You get the picture. We don’t make games for the mainstream, yet they really are very mainstream, if you ever truly play them. I’m proud to be different. There’s a reason why so many people, after they actually play Postal, tell me it’s one of their all-time favorite games.”

As well as arguing about their AI, their flexible and hailing their older, educated, politically-libertarian audience is unexpected, to say the least. More here.
