In A Nanny State: Goat Simulator Alpha

By Alec Meer on February 4th, 2014.

Firstly: this a tech demo that’s right now is basically just for fun, rather than marking an abrupt change of direction for Sanctum devs Coffee Stain Studios.

Secondly: awwwwww. Hope they wind up doing something with it anyway.

Thirdly: GOAT SIMULATOR.

Sanctum 2′s “Ruins Of Brightholme” Incoming

By Jim Rossignol on September 5th, 2013.

The first DLC for Coffee Stain’s first-person tower defense sequel, Sanctum 2, is materialising in the shadows of a grimmer version of the game world. According to the devs, Ruins Of Brightholme “takes you to a darker side of the Sanctum universe”, and the images they’ve sent over (more below) seem to confirm that. New towers are “Makeshift Cannon” and “Rupture Mine Tower”, and new weapons include “Circle Saw” and “Nailgun”.

Certainly sounds a bit darker. It lands on Friday.

Buckets And Spades: Sanctum 2 Adds Sandbox Mode

By Cara Ellison on July 31st, 2013.

The lovely people at Coffee Stain Studios have given their first person tower defence game Sanctum 2 a big giant patch with lots of lovely new updates in it, like pausing (I love a good pause) (………) and a sandbox, so get out your bucket and spade!

What is a sanctum really, you might ask, besides a word that sci fi and fantasy games love leaving pretty much everywhere like a rabbit might leave droppings. Well, I might say to you, it is usually used for sacred places like shrines and churches, or is simply a “private place from which most people are excluded”. I have been calling our fridge that for a whole day now, guarding it very carefully with a prongs-out fork, and my housemate Alice is getting very cross. Read the rest of this entry »

Enter Their Safe Arms: Sanctum 2 Demo

By John Walker on May 23rd, 2013.

Very soon I will have finished the first ever Virtual Novel RTS game. This follows hot on the heels of my first ever top-down football manager (you can see the very thin lines of the top edges of the graphs), and the first ever basketball third-person shooter. I WILL CORNER ALL MARKETS! Unfortunately, beating me to the first ever FPS tower defence game (or so they claim – there was bound to be one on Amiga that was only released in Poland), was Sanctum, and now there’s a Sanctum 2. A game that Jim described as “decent”. But Jim was given a copy to review, in his usually corrupt fashion. You, as just some ghastly member of the ordinary public, will have to pay £12. So that’s why I’ve just invented the concept of the “demo”.

Wot I Think: Sanctum 2

By Jim Rossignol on May 21st, 2013.

Sanctum was something of a rocket out of left field. There’s nothing unusual about tower defence, of course, and the “action” tower defence genre is now setting itself up as a thing, but Sanctum’s tight sci-fi world and solid feel set it apart from either tower defence games or FPS titles. That meant popularity, and a lot of players. Sanctum 2, meanwhile, attempts to place a fresh turret on top of previous successes, and use a flamethrower on the opposition. I spent some time with it. Here’s Wot I Think.

The Secret Of Super Sanctum TD

By Jim Rossignol on May 14th, 2013.

Sanctum 2‘s release is hovering over us like a drone, and that’s a good thing, because Dr Smith rather enjoyed the original game, and I’ve got a kick out of what I’ve played so far of that shiny sequel. However, there is already something else with the Sanctum name on it on the Steam store page, and that’s Super Sanctum TD. And this where things get a bit meta: it’s a tower defence game from inside Sanctum 2, as you can see in the trailer below. It is apparently the result of nine months work, and is either free if you pre-order, or $4. It’s a tower defence game, like I am not sure they actually made in 16-bit days.

Hmm.

Going On The Defensive: Sanctum 2′s First Trailer

By Nathan Grayson on March 23rd, 2013.

Ruh-ruh-ruh-ruh-roh, Raggy.

Sanctum 2, the follow-up to Coffee Stain Studios’ first-person tower defense titan, has been a known quantity for quite some time now – at least, insofar as we know that we know very little about how it all comes together. Sure, Coffee Stain’s been running a rather expansive dev blog, but games are sometimes known for their gameplay. Or so I have heard. But enough hearing; let’s see some things. What kind of things, you ask? How about guns, giblets, jump pads, bug mechs, four-player co-op, and several-hundred thousand graphics? The break beckons. Do not deny it. It becomes dangerously aggressive when spurned.

Gimme Shelter: Sanctum 2 In Motion (Probably)

By Alec Meer on March 14th, 2013.

Actually just one of them's bad news if you work at Maxis

Is this first footage from boots-on-the-ground tower defence sequel Sanctum 2 in-game or pre-rendered? Don’t ask me, I’m rapidly losing the ability to tell. Last week Jim showed me an Arma 3 video and I genuinely had to ask if it was from a game or a real recording, even though it featured a man being fired into the sky. I worry about myself, I really do. I’m pretty sure this is from the game itself though, even if it’s scripted up the wazoo for comic effect. If so, it will be a pretty videogame, as they go. It will also have towers in, but I guess we knew that.

In Spiritum Sequitur: Sanctum 2 Announced

By Adam Smith on February 7th, 2012.

Imagine this with the astonishing graphics of 2013. Crikey!

Top notch first-person space tower defense malarkey, Sanctum, is going to have a baby! Imagine that. The offspring will take the form of a sequel, which is going to dally with the consoles on the sly but if it’s as enjoyable as the original, I’m sure that won’t stop us from greeting it with delighted ‘awwws’ and dreadful babyspeak. Work has already begun at Coffee Stain Studios, who reckon they sold 300,000 copies of the first, but we shouldn’t expect Sanctum 2 before 2013 apparently. It’s also worth nothing that Sanctum is available for £2.37 on Steam for a few hours.
