The Flare Path: Belt-Fed, Bipod-Mounted, Beer-Cooled

By Tim Stone on August 1st, 2014.

For the last three years this column has used an ancient bolt-action Lee-Metford to dispense sim and wargame news. This week, as an experiment, we’ll be trialling a far more modern fact flinger, the MG 42K. According to its manual, this Mauser-manufactured marvel can fire 20 separate story snippets in under a minute! Obviously, the high ROF comes at a price. Accuracy – “especially at the end of long bursts” – can be “slightly compromised” says the bumph. Give me a second to insert my ear plugs and press my cheek against the porcelain-cool steel stock, and we’ll set about finding out what “slightly compromised” means. Read the rest of this entry »

Mighty Vroombeasts: DTM Experience Demo

By Craig Pearson on October 21st, 2013.

The DTM Experience site now has a demo for SimBin’s next racing game. Google tells me DTM means “Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters”, which is a great phrase to start the week on. “Tourenwagen” conjures up images of rickety wooden carts speeding around race tracks, and I’ll admit I got a bit lost imagining that scenario: the cheering crowds, the stench of horse manure, the drivers in their branded cowboy hats climbing on top of their wagons, go faster stripes painted down the whip handles. Notice a ‘there’ where there should be a ‘they’re’. Shake fist at English language. Hurriedly rectify. 13.58. Spy a wan ‘wont’ wantonly wanting an apostrophe. Hurriedly rectify. 13.59. Wander, knot fore the thirst thyme, if I’m cut out for this writing-about-games lark. 14.00. Press ‘PUBLISH’ then sink into armchair while exhaling like a bullet-riddled Beaufighter tyre. Get Your Race On (Demo From The Internet)

By Kieron Gillen on October 9th, 2009.

Vroomosity high.

The best thing about racing games is the Vrooming. Now that’s sorted out: There’s a Race On demo available. What is it? More than 600Mb yet less than 700Mb. More specifically, it includes the Racing Event (A weekend of training, qualifying and the all important racing) and Time Attack (Where the nature of temporal existence is undermined by a big old vroom-car). It’s the latest game by SimBin, and it looks like…
