Wot I Think: Snapshot

Photography-based puzzle-platformer Snapshot is the latest from depict1 dev Retro Affect (one half of which is Kyle Pulver, he of Offspring Fling fame). Long-anticipated, it finally gave itself to the world last week. Here’s what I made of it.

A Snippet Of Snapshot

Paparazzi will love Snapshot
In my life I’ve shot about 100 bullets and taken about 12 billion photographs, so why are the stats in games skewed towards bangthings? I’ll tell you why: Gov’t funded Big Ammo have been lobbying to have guns replace photographs in all games. Doom was originally about photographing demon families for their Christmas cards, until the developers were visited in the dead of night. Then it mysteriously became about killing things with bullets. Check the game code. It’s all in the code, people! Well brave soldiers Retro Affect are fighting the good fight with Snapshot, their bullet-free platform game where you use photos of the environment to solve puzzles. Five minutes of Zapruder-beating footage is right here. You can’t stop the signal!

Would You Kindly Play Depict1?

Recycling saves trees, stop moaning

(And I just realised after writing this that someone called Kieron already posted about this last year. Raaaargh. Oh well, you should still play it now if you didn’t then. Old doesn’t mean dead. Plus it means I don’t have to take a new screenshot!)

Ooh, this is excellently devious. A Flash platform game from the developer of Snapshot that is… selective about the truth. I don’t want to spoil too much, but its cleverness lies in two key fields: 1) needing to figure out the controls and mechanics for yourself 2) a narrator who demands your attention and trust but doesn’t do much to earn it. And, despite his/her/its mendacity, it’s hard not to like them.

Now You’re Thinking With Screenshots

It's so hard to convey time travel with a lone, static screenshot. FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS

Indie dev Arthur ‘Mr. Pondukian’ Lee was so wrapped up in mashing together Portal and Snapshot for this physics- and time-warping tech demo that he forgot to even give it a name! Silly boy. That’s breaking one of the golden rules of self-promotion. In every other respect, Lee is very clearly not silly: this is a flat-out astonishing proof of concept. What if… instead of simply opening a doorway to another area, entering a portal you created also rewound time to the point where you created its exit, which was itself done by taking a screenshot of your desired destination point/time? Ack, my clumsy words plum don’t sum this up at all satisfactorily. I’m going to have to ask you to watch this video. It’s worth it, trust me.
