Each Monday, Chris Livingston visits an early access game and reports back with stories about whatever he finds inside. This week, terraforming sand and terrorizing villagers with Son of Nor.

I lift my hands and the sand at my feet forms into a towering pillar. I point my palms down and the sand retreats, creating a deep sinkhole. I am a Son of Nor, a mystic imbued with telekinetic powers and charged with the protection of my village. And I’ll totally get around to protecting my village at some point. For reals, you guys, I will. Right now, though, I’m trying to raise a sand pillar high enough to cover the buttcrack of the giant nude statue that looms over the town. Why? I have my reasons, and those reasons are: I have sand powers and there’s a giant elevated stone butt.

Fuuuuuture: Control Son Of Nor With Your Thoughts

Control entire games with only one eyebrow!

Keyboard-and-mouse versus controller? Pfft, only dinosaurs still have that argument. And motion control? That requires primitive hardware like living room boxes and flesh-infested bodies. No, today I’m bringing you a vision of our collective brain-in-a-gelatinous-tube future – the next mighty step in progress’ inevitable march. Son of Nor, you see, is set to allow for partial mind control. Using a wearable cyber crown called the Emotiv EPOC, you’ll be able to cast spells by thinking really, really hard until something cool happens. Or at least, that’s the impression Still Alive Studios’ video gives, and it’s quite an impressive thing indeed.

Sand Cast Well: Son Of Nor Kickstarter

Hnnng. HNNNNNNNNG! HNNNNNNNNNN… Gah! It’s no good. I can’t move the clementine on my desk using the power of my mind. All I succeeded in doing was bursting a blood vessel and accidentally predicting the next 100 years of winning Lottery numbers. Stupid brain. I want floating citrussy goodness, not creepy eyes and untold wealth. I guess I’ll have to instead turn to Son Of Nor, the third-person RPG where you reshape the world with your mental powers. The promising third-person action game of world telekinesis and terraforming has just popped up on the crowd-funding site. The pitch is below.

Black & White Brawler: Son Of Nor

I’m playing Crysis 3 at the moment, more on which soon, but one of the thoughts pinballing around my head is that it’s made so much world, with so much detail, then provided almost no purpose for of memorable interaction with it. Watching the latest alpha footage of physics combat game Son Of Nor made for a timely comparison: a stark desert setting, unfinished art, but a world you interact with and deform dramatically. Ooooo: Son Of Nor Has Terraforming, Fire Tornadoes

No word yet, sadly, on whether or not Captain Planet is a playable character.
Oh my, this is a nice surprise. Son of Nor bills itself as an action-RPG with “challenging puzzles, dynamic sand manipulations, and an innovative magic system,” but honestly, it looks like Avatar: The Last Airbender: The First Good Game. For the uninitiated, that means magical telekinetic-ish elemental powers – including the ability to raise and lower the desert’s sands as you see fit. Also, I feel like – as a child – I would’ve engaged with math on a much more intrinsic level if it’d included such examples as “Fireball + Sandstorm = Fire Tornado.” There’s apparently co-op in there as well, and – though it’s super early in development – it all looks impressively explosive and heavy hitting. At any rate, you + the break = trailer watching. So do that.
