Space Wheeze

I can't even remember this dude's name, despite playing as him for 12 hours

Over at Eurogamer today is my review of Gas Powered Games’ new action-RPG Space Siege. The demo really got folks’ backs up, but does the full game better realise Diablo in space? Or in space, can no-one hear you snore? (trad).

It’s like a hobo convincing himself he’s a businessman purely because he found a knackered briefcase in a skip and stole a suit from a charity shop.

Wuh-oh.

I wonder if we’ll see Chris Taylor et al rabidly defending this game, or if they realise it’s a colossal cock-up and will keep quiet. Perhaps they should be outspoken – Dennis Dyack has probably managed to flog a fair few extra copies of his own lacklustre (though significantly more entertaining than this) sci-fi action-RPG, Too Human, by being/pretending to be absolutely batshit crazy on the internet. But ack, what a shame. Please get Demigod right, GPG. (The tinfoil hat part of me, incidentally, wonders if perhaps this was a concious rush-job to raise quick cash for GPG’s move into self-publishing. A intensely paranoid theory, but it would make me feel better about Space Siege).

Space Siege: Impressions, Cautious Defence

Not actually possible yourself. Sigh

Figured I’d lob up some thoughts now I’ve actually played the Space Siege demo. It’s going to be a divisive title, though currently the nays seem to have it.

I’m convinced it’s actually quite an ambitious game, more so than it’s being given credit for. The trouble – and the possible cause of negative reactions to the demo – is that this ambition may have come at the expense of character.

Space Siege: Demo Is Go

I’ll write up some impressions later today or tomorrow, once I’ve had the chance to play it (I’m a little wrapped in two other biggish games – silly season has started at last) but for now just a quick heads’ up (heads-up? head’s up? Gah) – Space Siege, the new RPG from Dungeon Siege/SupCom lot Gas Powered Games, has had the demo treatment.

There’s a lot of question marks over this game, and looks like they’ll finally be resolved. Will it be the same somewhat monotonal hacky-slashy formula as the previous Sieges? Is there more to space than metal corridors? Is the robot awesome? The answer to these questions and more can be found here. It is 957 Byteymegas.

Geddem!

Last time we posted a trailer of Gas Powered Games’ forthcoming game, Space Siege, the RPS comments threads seemed distinctly unimpressed. Is that all you’ve got, Mr Space Siege? A new, a distinctly more impressive trailer, suggests not. It’s lurking beneath the cut, along with a second-by-second breakdown.

I had the distinct please of having some hands-on time with Space Siege recently, the results of which you’re able to read in the latest PC Gamer UK. (They also have an almighty preview of Empire Total War.) Anyway, a cinematic trailer for Space Siege has been released and you can find it after the jump. We’ll hopefully be talking to the devs of said action RPG in a few weeks time, so if you have an questions about the game they’re calling “Diablo-with-cyborgs” the post them below. Perhaps they’ll even get answered…

Games For 2008: Space Siege

SPACE CHUMS!

Gas Powered Games make mechanical games. Games where story and character are entirely secondary concerns to the underlying weights and balances: Supreme Commander and Dungeon Siege are creations of honed function, not form. These are games that do not understand this human thing you call ‘love.’

It’s a very deliberate methodology, and one to celebrate. It’s quite the rarity these days, a time of graphical plenty, wherein cheap-to-make in-engine cutscenes see so many games overwhelmed by their own self-indulgent, exposition-choked narratives. At least someone’s still aware that you’ve paid your money to play a game.

With Space Siege though, everything changes.

Killing Beasts (In Space)

The other upcoming game from Chris Taylor and Gas Powered Games, Space Siege, has been shown off at CES in Las Vegas. Predictably, it’s looking rather like its template/inspiration, Dungeon Siege. But, y’know, in space.

Thanks, Game Trailers (In Spaaace!)

We’ll be taking a closer look at this action-RPG concoction in our amazing 2008 coverage, next week.
