Avago: Avadon 2 – The Corruption Is Out, Plus Demo

By John Walker on November 1st, 2013.

Spiderweb’s Jeff Vogel has been making RPGs for twenty years, but I only caught onto them a couple of years back. But my tardiness doesn’t dampen my enthusiasm to learn his new game is now out. Avadon 2: The Corruption, the sequel to 2011’s Avadon: The Black Fortress, is out today. And it promises lots of improvements over the last, already very decent game, based on player feedback.

Avadon 2 Will Be Released 366 Days Before Halloween 2014

By Alec Meer on October 15th, 2013.

It’s my first day back after three months off and – oh you don’t care in the slightest, naturally. STRAIGHT TO BUSINESS, eh? I like that in a semi-anonymous website reader who I shall likely never meet. Here is some business: release date and stuff for Avadon 2, which sharper observers may glean is the sequel to Avadon, the old schoolish RPG from Spiderweb Software. Not to be confused with Avernum, Spiderweb’s other old schoolish RPG series, although you probably will confuse them given they look remarkably similar. I’ve played a few here and there and I can attest to them being a good time, achieving scope and scale while also a clear focus and roleplaying mechanics.*

Some News About Avadon 2: The Corruption

By Jim Rossignol on August 27th, 2013.

Spiderweb has now been making turn-based RPGs for a long time. Twenty years. We spoke to Mr Vogel about that quite recently, and he’s not looking to break his pattern: Avadon 2: The Corruption is landing some time before the end of the year. Spiderweb explains: “As a Hand of Avadon, the Black Fortress, you once held unlimited power. Your word was law. Your homeland was united and prospered under the protection of the Black Fortress. Now that fragile alliance has collapsed. Rebellion rages, outside enemies gather, and Avadon lies in ruins. Will you fight to restore your power and bring peace to your realm, or will you join the rebels and forge a new nation? The decision will be yours in Avadon 2: The Corruption.”

Interview: Jeff Vogel On Bundles, Graphics And Pessimism

By John Walker on July 17th, 2013.

Jeff Vogel is the man behind Spiderweb Software, the studio that recently celebrated its twentieth anniversary of creating rich, deep RPGs. As a week-long Humble sale draws to a close tomorrow, we dragged Jeff away from writing content for Avadon 2 to talk about the amazing success of the sale and how it will put his kids through college, the changing nature of selling indie games over the years, and how feedback affects the RPGs he creates. You might also be surprised to learn whether he’d opt for flashier graphics if he could.

Spiderweb Software Are The New Weekly Humble Bundle

With excellent timing (we were just celebrating this yesterday), on the 20th anniversary of Spiderweb Software, the enormously loved games from RPG guru Jeff Vogel are the subject of this week’s Humble Weekly Bundle. Which is to say, you can get fifteen of the games for any price you like. Woo! You can see indie developer and living legend Vogel explaining this all below.

Goodness Me: Spiderweb Software Is Twenty

By John Walker on July 10th, 2013.

We’re a couple of days late with this, but I felt it really deserves a mention. Spiderweb Software, the studio that creates classic isometric RPGs, has just celebrated its 20th birthday. There aren’t many studios that can claim that, especially with the original team still working there. Of course, it helps that the original team is Jeff Vogel.

Caught In The Spiderweb: Avadon 2: Corruption

By Jim Rossignol on February 22nd, 2013.

Who put that there?
The world’s handsomest turn-based RPG developers (probably) Spiderweb, send word that they are bringing a second Avadon game into the world. It is to be named Corruption, and will bear the mark of “2”, indicating its sequelness. They explain: “Avadon 2: The Corruption is the second chapter in the epic Avadon trilogy. In this fantasy role-playing adventure, you will serve the keep of Avadon, working as a spy and warrior to fight the enemies of your homeland.” Shadowy powers and stuff abide, so it’s time to make turn-based decisions about the future of the fantasy world! Man, games are ace.

Avadon will appear on Mac and Windows in the autumn. Read our take on the previous game here.

Wot I Think: Avernum – Escape From The Pit

By John Walker on April 18th, 2012.

Turns out you don't need volumetric lighting in RPGs.

Spiderweb Software have one intention: to keep making 90s-style RPGs, and to keep making them good. Avernum: Escape From The Pit is their latest, technically the seventh game in the Avernum series (although presented with a fresh start), the 20th game from the developers, and the first of their games I’ve played. So from that perspective, and despite having spent so many hours still only a fraction of the way in, here’s Wot I Think:

The Monster Mash: Geneforge Saga

By Adam Smith on December 20th, 2011.

One of those screenshots that is Kryptonite to some and Lois Lane to others

On one level, this post exists to inform of a fantastic deal on that thar Steam, however it’s also the first time we’ve mentioned that the games in question have appeared on Steam at all. They are the Geneforge Saga, five RPGs created by Spiderweb Software between 2002 and 2008, although they feel as if they could have been made between 1992 and 1998, with their turn-based combat, isometric graphics and enormous amounts of questing and freedom. The Geneforge world combines traditional fantasy tropes with monster-making, leading to all sorts of choices and ethical dilemmas. Steam is currently offering these five massive RPGs for £8.49. There are also sizable demos over at Spiderweb’s site.

Role On: Avernum: Escape From the Pit

By Jim Rossignol on July 29th, 2011.

Some role-playing, yesterday.
Spiderweb send word that they are starting a new Avernum RPG trilogy. The first episode will be called Escape From The Pit, and should be available in “Q1 2012″. As usual the game will feature fantasy of the epic flavour, and plenty of turn-based combat. It also has an open sort of overall quest structure: “Three separate game-winning quests. Seek safety, escape or revenge. Do just one of them or all three!”

Spiderweb also explain that there will be a discount for previous Avernum series owners: “Avernum: Escape From the Pit for Macintosh and Windows will be available at a considerable discount for anyone who has purchased Exile: Escape From the Pit or Avernum from us in any form (including on compilation CDs).”

Wot I Think: Avadon: The Black Fortress

By Richard Cobbett on May 27th, 2011.

And if I didn't have to fit in this single square, I'd crush you for your insolence right now!
Avadon is Jeff Vogel’s latest RPG; a roaring saga of dark politics and glorious face furniture. It’ll give you hours and hours of questing… but will it show you a good time as you slay giant spiders and screw with the fate of nations? Well, let’s see Wot I Think…

You Could Play Avadon: The Black Fortress

By Jim Rossignol on May 4th, 2011.

Where would we be without wizards?
Because there’s a demo. Spiderweb Software’s Olden Skool CRPG is out now, and you can unlock the full game from the demo, I believe. Spiderweb have been going for quite some time now and, thanks to the pitiless gaze of their founder, Jeff Vogel, have never deviated from their mission. If Avadon tickles your interest them you should totally browse through their other games. There’s a fair few fantasy adventures to be had in there.

Avernum VI Demo: Aver Banana!

By Kieron Gillen on March 5th, 2010.

AVER BANANA!

That subject line makes no sense, but bear with me. It’s early and I’m tired. If you’re coming to Avernum now, of course, you’re not early. You’re late. In fact, as late as it’s possible to be. Except not too late. And… start again. Shorter sentences. Control. Avernum VI released. Demo available. Final part in Avernum series. Long-running, successful niche-targeting indie-RPGs. There’s also a deal to buy the whole second trilogy in one go. Hurrah! Well done Spiderweb for finishing their series. And user-created footage from the demo follows…
