Custom Incredulity: Starcraft II’s Map Cleverness

By Jim Rossignol on August 24th, 2009.

So Blizzard’s Starcraft: Ghost action game might not have seen the light of day, but it seems you’re going to be able to build your own third-person shooter within Starcraft II anyway. What? Yes, the editor is super-flexible, and is even going to support mouselook. Building a third-person shooter inside the RTS editing suite is going to be a possibility, as Blizzard demonstrated with their proof of concept at BlizzCon. Video of it in action below. The scrolling shooter is also acceptable. Cheers to sub edii for pointing out this link.

Starcraft 2 Is Now A Trilogy, Footage

By Jim Rossignol on October 11th, 2008.

Another transmission from Shacknews at Blizzcon reveals that the three races of Starcraft 2 are going to get a game each, with each game effectively being a Starcraft 2 expandalone. That’s right: the three-campaign game we were expecting is now three distinct games.

Each campaign will be very different, with [Blizzard bossman] Pardo announcing the Zerg campaign will contain RPG elements. The Protoss campaign will likewise be differentiated by elements of diplomacy. In addition, the Terran campaign will feature a Protoss mini-campaign.

Apparently each of the campaigns has enough content to justify a full, separate release. Apparently. Hmm. Two new bits of footage after the jump.

Nothing Compared To December 3

By Alec Meer on June 23rd, 2008.

Starcraft 2: December 3? That’s what several US retailers reckon. Shacknews speculate that it’s unlikely Best Buy, GameStop and Circuit City would coincidentally reach the same conclusion, and point out that this semi-announcement is happening just a week before Blizzard’s worldwide invitational thinger on the 28th June (which I’ll be at, as it happens). You know, the one they’ll reveal Diablo III at oh ha ha.

I seem to recall Blizzard have a habit of release dates that logic dictates is after the main Christmas buying pile-on – December 3’s certainly in line with that. This may well be pure gossip, however. Anyway, beneath the cut for good measure is a repeat of the CGI trailer thing to whet your appetite. It’s like Starcraft 2, but with better textures and no interface!

More Starcraft 2 Images

By Jim Rossignol on May 4th, 2008.

Thanks to reader Dan C for pointing out that Worthplaying have a gallery of new Starcraft 2 images up. It’s a bit of a shame they haven’t actually got any new information up there, but hey, you can’t have everything. Speaking of new information, is anyone going to the Blizzard Invitational in Paris? That apparently has some hands on Starcraft 2 available and I believe at least one node of the hivemind will be there to play it. In the meantime all we’ve got to go on is my session from last year.

Thanks Gametrailers! Special: Starcraft 2

By Kieron Gillen on March 17th, 2008.

In what’s becoming an oddly real-time-strategy heavy day at RPS, GameTrailers have gone a little bit crazy over the only game that can truly be described as something compared to Starcraft 2; It’s Starcraft 2. They’ve posted three (count ‘em!) videos about Starcraft 2. We said that before. Starcraft 2! Pay attention.

Thanks, Gametrailers!

The first one’s a comparison between Starcraft (original) and the new game, with further ones beneath the cut talking about how they’ve evolved the Zerg so they can zerg in a truly early-21st century manner, and another about how they plan to live up to the pressure of knowing an entire Asian nation will descend en masse to their homes and eviscerate them if they fail.

Protoss, Jim’s Hands-On With SC2

By Jim Rossignol on March 14th, 2008.

It’s interesting that Blizzard are really cranking up the Starcraft 2 hype this month, especially when rumours suggest the game is still so far off. If they keep this up we’ll be properly fed up by the time it hits…

Anyway, it occurs to me that I’ve not pointed out that I was one of the first people outside Blizzard to get to play Starcraft 2. So after the jump I’ve posted an extract from my PC Format feature, published in 2007. That and the nine-minute Protoss gameplay trailer.

Starcraft 2 Art Direction Vid

By Jim Rossignol on March 13th, 2008.

GameTrailers have posted an interview with Blizzard’s splendidly-named art big-wig, Samwise Didier. He explains how art direction feeds into game design and vice versa, as well as some other stuff. Good work, Samwise.

GameTrailers, you are the best of both art and science.

Some OLD Starcraft, Yesteryear.
The Blizzard mothership sends word that the signups for their World Wide Invitational in Paris are now open. The event, which will take place on the 28th and 29th of June, will showcase “the skills of top eSports gamers from around the world” as well as Blizzard’s formidable armory of games. “We look forward to bringing the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational to Europe for the first time and sharing our latest news with players there,” said Blizzard’s Level 70 CEO, Mike Morhaime. “In addition to the great tournament gaming that will be taking place at the event, we’re planning an entertaining show for all attendees.”

Games For 2008: Starcraft 2

By Jim Rossignol on January 7th, 2008.

This is the first in a month-or-so of pieces on the games we’re interested in for 2008. Please do leave your comments and let us know why you’re anxious, excited, or apathetic towards these games. We need to know.

pew, also: zap

There’s an anecdote about Blizzard’s office in Irvine that I’ve promised not to publish. It’s so absurdly appropriate to their nature as games designers that I had to stand in front of a mirror and smack myself around the face to avoid reproducing it here. It’s also the /perfect/ introduction to a piece about Starcraft 2, and it’s painful to have promised not to use it.

Anyway, that same office is where I sat down and played Starcraft 2, just prior to its demonstration at last year’s BlizzCon. I should first point out that I thrashed the pants offa’ my colleague from PC Gamer Sweden in our second multiplayer session, and that I was just testing in the first game… then perhaps we should move on to some details about Starcraft 2 itself.
