Now Steaming: FMV Fighting Game Stay Dead

The blurring between video and video game is a weird history of technology. The storage space of CD-ROMs enabled FMV cutscenes and interactive movies. 3D graphics pushed out FMV as the new novelty. Motion capture let real actors mime basic actions for 3D models. Faster 3D hardware led to more-detailed character models able to perform more and more-intricate actions. Now we have dead-eyed glossy mannequins who are kissing why are they kissing this is so weird.

Stay Dead [official site] seems like it’s from another time, with footage of real actors fighting strung together into something between a turn-based fighting game and an interactive movie. It first came out in 2012, but a surprise Steam release yesterday reminded me of all this again.

What’s In The Eclectic Bundle In A Box?

Would David Fincher’s Se7en be any better if the revelation at the end was that the box contained a pile of indie games for almost no money at all? It would certainly be less psychologically damaging to Brad Pitt to discover the Lovecraft inspired platformer Eversion in there instead of (a box of fluffy kittens for sale – spoiler ed). And while he lived happily ever after he could think back to that lovely day when he and Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey all hung out in a dusty field playing indie games. That’s the power of cheap indie games, people: they make you forget someone killed loads of people in really horrible ways.

Interactive Moving Images: Stay Dead

Imagine playing a game with a friend next to you on the couch perched on the arm of your office chair and saying to that friend: “You thought this was a movie, didn’t you, but it’s actually a fighting game with 150 different techniques distributed in 5 stages.” Of course, you’d only say that if you weren’t a person at all but were, instead, the press release for BRUCEfilm’s Stay Dead. “Forget about the old interactive movies from the 80’s” you’d go on to say, “Stay Dead is a fast action arcade game with total freedom of action, combined with a cinematographic direction.” Perhaps you’d add that it’s out now and then re-enact the utterly brilliant trailer. Watch.
