The Flare Path: Rules The Waves

I am the very model of a contented desktop Admiral,

I’ve information financial, political, and tactical,

I grow my navy patiently to echo fights historical,

Not Tsushima or Jutland, but battles roughly comparable;

I mull over decisions with implications international,

And design my own ships using rules quite mathematical;

Exposed to a wargame this deep, fresh, and dreadnoughtical,

It would be profoundly criminal not to get a little evangelical.

The Flare Path: Dreadnoughts And Droid Thoughts

Though my Battle-of-Jutland-through-the-eyes-of-a-ship’s-cat war movie remains unfunded, untitled and largely unwritten, I have mentally sketched out the final scene.

EXT. FIRTH OF FORTH. DAWN.

Passing under the awesome edifice of the Forth Bridge, the bruised and battered HMS Warspite is pelted with coal by disappointed railway workers. Tickles, asleep in her customary spot atop ‘A’ turret, wakes and dashes for cover. Scampering across the bloodstained, shrapnel scored deck, she is struck by a flying lump of anthracite and drops down dead. The Flare Path: Hasn’t The Foggiest

If there’s one thing Inca weather deity Illapa hates, it’s prayers. They say the moment he hears anything resembling a request, he wraps the world in a snow-white alpaca fleece and heads for the hills. Some sap has obviously been badgering him, because we haven’t seen our wingtips in forty minutes. Somewhere down there is a little mining town called Cascada Negra. If we don’t spot its flare path soon, Dorado Aviacon is going to be in the market for a new DC-3 and flight crew, and the only ones who’ll be reading this shipment of prime sim and wargame news will be centipedes and javelina. The Flare Path: Mustangled Up In Blue

You can tell a lot about a person from their favourite WW2 fighter. Hawker Hurricane admirers are hardworking, realistic, and loyal. Bf 109 fans are contrary and meticulous. Fiat Freccia fiends are Italian. Westland Whirlwind worshippers are prone to melancholy, and often smell faintly of aniseed. Mustang devotees are bold, impatient and have a very low tolerance for silly Flare Path introductions that claim you can tell a lot about a person from their favourite WW2 fighter.

The Flare Path: Pretty Pleas

There are five buses in this pic and they all have military connections. Name a bus, win an FP point upholstered with authentic London Transport moquette.

If I was to be run-over and killed by a bus tomorrow, all the sims and wargames on my ‘back end of a bus’ list might never get covered on RPS. That thought keeps me awake at nights (even though recent Hampshire County Council cuts mean my chance of being run down by public transport is now virtually nil). What’s to be done? Well, I suppose I could devote this week’s Flare Path to ugly ducklings. The three titles lurking beyond the jump, might have lovely personalities but, superficial swine that I am, I’m really not sure I can bear to gaze upon them long enough to find out.
