2K: Bioshock 2 Dates, Mafia 2 Delay

By Jim Rossignol on May 27th, 2009.

So Take 2 Interactive (2K Games) finally got around to discussing their end of financial year stuff, and as well as a load of money stuff being discussed, more relevant news about release dates emerged. Bioshock 2 will hit on October 30th in Europe, and November 3rd in the US. It also has a new teaser site. Woo. Mafia II meanwhile has been delayed until at least October 31st, and could be any time between then and April 30th 2010. Borderlands is still scheduled for a “fourth quarter” release, and Max Payne 3 is due in Winter 2009.

And that sounds like a hell of a line up.

Shake It, Maybe: 3D Realms “Not Closed”

By Jim Rossignol on May 19th, 2009.

But they have dissolved the DNF dev team. Shacknews has the full statement.

Despite rumors and statements to the contrary, 3D Realms (3DR) has not closed and is not closing. 3DR retains ownership of the Duke Nukem franchise. Due to lack of funding, however, we are saddened to confirm that we let the Duke Nukem Forever (DNF) development team go on May 6th, while we regroup as a company. While 3DR is a much smaller studio now, we will continue to operate as a company and continue to license and co-create games based upon the Duke Nukem franchise.

No Joke Comes To Mind: Meier on EA/Take 2

By Kieron Gillen on March 3rd, 2008.

Developers watching you. Silently.

Newsweek’s N’Gai Croal writes that he managed to ask Firaxis’ Sid Meier about the possible EA take-over of their owner Take 2. To which Sid responds…

“We worked with Electronic Arts ten years ago. We respect them highly as a company. They’re a great company. We enjoy working with Take-Two. We’ll let them sort that out [laughs]. Take-Two has been very good about giving us the creative freedom to do the best games that we can, and I think what Electronic Arts is saying is really along the same directions. That’s really our priority, to really be able make the best games that we can. And both those publishers would give us that opportunity. We’ll let them work that out.”

He also talks about thinking EA does have a commitment to great games, and that’s the important thing. Whole thing can be read here. N’Gai, continuing to embarrass us by doing proper big-boy journalism while we’re busy writing about Wuthering Heights being nifty, also talked to EA about Take 2 and Take 2 about EA.

EA to take Take 2?

By Kieron Gillen on February 24th, 2008.

CONSUME!

“Consolidation” has been mentioned time and time over in the last few years, and it’s taken an interesting turn. Electronic Arts have made an offer of $26 per share to gain control of Take 2 Interactive – two billion GB Pounds, over sixty percent more than their worth when the offer was made. The offer was made to the Take 2 board of directors – who rejected it. EA have now made it publicly known to Take 2’s shareholders. The take-over would give EA ownership of all of Take 2’s brands and studios, which includes everyone from Rockstar North to Irrational (aka, hnnnggghhh, 2K Boston). Lots more over at Yahoo.

Initial thoughts: This has be taken as a vote of confidence in the forthcoming GTA4’s quality, yeah? [Answer: yes – read on]

Indecision Over Mafia-Developer Purchase Pun

By Kieron Gillen on January 8th, 2008.

This is a proud moment for Games Journalism.

News reaches us that Take Two have been reaching into their bag of many dollars to add another studio to their collection, buying the Czech Republic’s largest developer, Illusion Softworks, creators of Hidden and Dangerous and Mafia. After the undisclosed sum was paid, all 200 of Illusion Softworks employees will be working in the cleverly named “2K Czech”. Now, we wanted to write a serious piece of analysis, comparing the purchase of Irrational while developing future 2K heavyweight Bioshock (and profiting from the closer relationship i.e. Money) to the purchase of Illusion Softworks while developing hypothetical future 2K heavyweight Mafia 2, but we started worrying about what pun to call the article.

I mean, immediately I wanted “Woo-Ha! Got you all in Czech!”, but Jim countered with the elegant “Take Two Moves For Czech Mates”. I’m considering the traditional crime-based “An Offer They Couldn’t Refuse?” before Waker goes into pun-overdrive with a “Take 2 software developers into the shower? Why, when you can buy them all and take only one?” which is too long to fit on the title line, but is quite a devastating array of terrible punnery. Finally, Alec unleashes the tri-pronged offensive of “Mafia: City of Lost Revenue”, “Use Your Illusion II (Make More Money)” and “Illusion Incur Irrational’s Indignity”, and I’m left all confused and no idea what to write. Poor me.

What do you think? Also, about the sale?
