Bohemia Rhapsody: Humble Bundle Offers Old Arma Games

By Graham Smith on January 17th, 2014.

Carrier Command? I hardly know her! ...

Bohemia are well known as the creators of the deep and deeply shonky military sim Arma and its zombie-infested survival spin-off DayZ. They’re moderately known as the creators of turn-based spinoff Arma Tactics and commercial helicopter sim Take On Helicopters. They’re not at all known as the developers of XCOM-homage UFO: Afterlight and Alpha Prime, which is some sort of videogame.

Yet you’ll find all of the above in this week’s Humble Weekly sale, the Bohemia Humble Bundle.

The Flare Path: Curious Rover

By Tim Stone on February 8th, 2013.

Found the camouflaged pillbox in Proteus yet? Or the crashed G4M Betty? No, me neither. I’m starting to think that white owl is a wind-up merchant. From now on I’m only going to trust the crabs. I know they’re honest because they’re the ones who pincer-pointed me in the direction of a staggeringly beautiful Mars mod for Vehicle Simulator, a blue-chip flight model overhaul for Take On Helicopters, and a rather unexpected demo for HPS Simulations’ Ancient Warfare series.

Hindsight Is 10.99: Take On Helicopters: Hinds Launches

By Craig Pearson on March 15th, 2012.

Other gags included 'In hindsight this Hind sight was inevitable', and 'What a nice be-Hind'
Bohemia Interactive’s chopper-centric sim was always going to drop in some angry war tech. That’s what they know, and that’s what we love about them. So we’re here to celebrate the addition of the Hind to Take On Helicopters with a fairly warry trailer. I don’t know about you, but to me the Hind in this DLC launch trailer looks pissed off. Probably because it’s having to do its rarr-war-rarr thing in what’s considered a civilian flight sim. He was born for war, forged in steel, headbutted into aero-dynamic shape, his blades sharpened on the screams of the ghosts of conflict. He’s here to bring more sky death to the mostly sedate world of Take On Helicopters.

In Today’s Helicopter News: TKOH Hind DLC

By Jim Rossignol on February 9th, 2012.

What shall we do, John?
Take On Helicopters is going to getting some big fat Russian helicopters in its first DLC. Like this: “Highly detailed models of the Mi-24 V, Mi-24 P and Mi-35 Super Hind helicopters across a range of over 25 different liveries.” That is some Cold War helicopter sex, right there. It’s also going move away from the commercial helcopterings of the base game, and allow you get back to Bohemia’s more traditionally shooty territories. They explain: “after launching the game, we felt there was room to complement Take On Helicopters with a more ‘action-packed’ experience. Our Hinds DLC is perfect for those who are seeking the adrenaline rush of flying a classic military gunship and getting into combat.” It’s coming out on the 15th of March and it’ll cost €12.99. There’s some kind of crazy bundle order deal, too, which you can read about over here.

A-ha, A Demo: Take On Take On Helicopters

By Alec Meer on November 30th, 2011.

that's me stumbling away

What? What? It can’t really be just me who thinks of A-ha’s finest hour whenever Bohemia’s Take On Helicopters is mentioned, can it? Hmmph. Perhaps I can break the association by writing about the chopper sim’s new demo, which is out now. At 3.6GB it’s faintly monstrous, but the contents sound highly generous. You should take it on, take it on. It’ll be gone, in a day or twooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

(It won’t be gone in a day or two). Full contents and moving images below.

Wot I Think: Take On Helicopters

By Rob Zacny on November 22nd, 2011.

Start with the odd name: Take on Helicopters. At once a warning and an invitation, it sounds at first like a bad translation. After a few hours at the controls of its rotary-winged menagerie, the title ceases to sound strange and becomes a fairly accurate invitation. It asks, can you Take on Helicopters? Here’s wot I think.

Flight Check: Take On Helicopters Released

By Andrew Smee on October 28th, 2011.

wubwubwubwubwubwubwubwubwubwubwubwub

Take On Helicopters, Bohemia Entertainment’s civilian helicopter sim, has landed. Or taken off. Or remains hovering, terrifying, in the air, threatening to remove fingers from waving hands. Our lovely Tim was quite taken with it and now you can be too. It’s on Steam for $49.99 or £31.99 and is also available on a whole crate-load of international distributors. Tim recommended it for anyone with even a passing interest in flight sims, so fire up those rotors and watch out for crosswinds. The release trailer’s fuelling up after the jump, and features footage of some thrilling low-altitude flights through the tree line.

Pre-Flight Snack: Take On Helicopters

By Jim Rossignol on October 5th, 2011.

This man is your friend. OR IS HE. Actually I have no idea.
Take On Helicopters Pre-Order Beta access thing is now live. The full game of commercial hovering is released on the 27th, but you can get it now if you are so inclined. For some insight into what the simulator contains you can read Mr Stone’s take on the thing, where he says: “Even if the campaign turns out to be a bug-spattered nightmare, I’ll still be recommending ToH to anyone with even a passing interest in simulated flight.”

Gosh.

Larkin About: Take On Helicopters Test Flown

By Tim Stone on September 28th, 2011.

My left mouse button is confused. It’s just spent five unbroken hours with a Bohemia Interactive game and not once was it asked to snuff out a man’s life. There were times when I felt like asking it to snuff out a man’s life, but as the preview build of Take On Helicopters doesn’t include player firearms, such a request would have been fairly pointless. After the jump, a picture of the man I wished dead, plus twelve hundred words where four -“Take On Helicopters! Gosh!” – probably would have sufficed. Read the rest of this entry »

The Flare Path: This One’s For Dobbs

By Tim Stone on September 16th, 2011.

1 point for the name, and 1 for the word that links it with a famous Escher lithograph

October 18, 1923. While watching sycamore keys twirl from trees in a Kiev park, a young engineer called Igor Sikorsky has an extraordinary idea. What if rotary motion could be used to dry damp laundry. That evening over beer and mushroom broth in a local hostelry, Igor describes his idea to hard-of-hearing colleague Wolfgang Helicopter. The rest is history.

This week is whirlybird week here on Flare Path. Beyond yonder text-horizon there’s talk of two work-in-progress helo sims plus a video guide to stealing the soul of a P-51. Read the rest of this entry »

Chopper Envy: Take On Helicopters

By Jim Rossignol on September 2nd, 2011.

Some kind of story is happening to the helicopter!
If there is something I’d really like to be simulated, it would be a giant digging machine that could bore through to the deepest parts of the Earth and then shoot upward, bursting out of the ground and eating the entire Eiffel tower in its spinning jaws. One day that will be simulated. But not today. Today we wait for Take On Helicopters, a simulation of one of the helicopters that will no doubt buzz around the giant Earth drill-ship like flies, perhaps bravely allowing the heroes of the movie to leap onto the armoured drill deck and fight their way inside, before finally duelling the evil and insane drill-ship controller on the bridge, as a nuclear bomb’s timer ticks down to zero. Amazing stuff.

The Take On Helicopters trailer, which features impossibly handsome helicopters, some knees, and more dials than I know how to look at (but zero colossal rock-boring mole-craft) is below.

Take On Helicopters Taster For Op Arrowers

By Jim Rossignol on June 24th, 2011.

A light chopper, yesterday.
Op Archers? Owners of Operation Arrowhead, anyway. If you are one of those people – as you should be if you like soldier simming – then you are entitled to a preview version of Take On Helicopters, the forthcoming commercial chopper game from Bohemia Interactive. It looks like this is a sort of add-on for Operation Arrowhead which demonstrates the new flight model and pilot animation using a “light chopper” (pictured). Perfect if you were wondering how you were going to be able to get through another weekend without some simulated hovering.

Bohemia On Carrier Command, Arma III

By Jim Rossignol on June 13th, 2011.

Last week I had a chance to talk to the Bohemia Interactive bossman, Marek Spanel. As one of the brains behind the original Operation Flashpoint, and then the three Arma games that followed, he is one PC gaming’s most ambitious developers. He’s now embarking on a huge project of developing three games across three studios at the same time: Arma 3, Take On Helicopters, and Carrier Command. I had a chance to talk to him about this bold undertaking.
