Rock, Paper, Shotgun Officially Rules Against Teaser Trailers

By John Walker on February 10th, 2014.

The Court Of Horace has ruled, and the decision is final – infinite even: teaser trailers can bugger off.

Trailers are adverts. Adverts are not precious jewels. Adverts are materials with a joint purpose – to convince people to buy your product, and to inform people about the product. The former is creepy and insidious and why we walk around like a race of sentient billboards with our Nike swooshes and names of jeans manufacturers on our t-shirts. The latter is vaguely useful, and the reason we post trailers on RPS – so you, the ASTONISHINGLY ATTRACTIVE reader, can learn more about a game you might care about. Teaser trailers fulfil none of these roles. As is adeptly proven by both Techland’s latest for Dying Light that we showed you earlier, and frankly the worst, dumbest teaser I can ever recall seeing, for Evolve, which is below.

Murdered: Square Want You To Solve Your Own Murder

By John Walker on February 20th, 2013.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Square’s just-announced tease for a game called Murdered: Soul Suspect, is that they managed to secure murdered.com for it. I say that because we know literally nothing else about the game at this point, beyond a gloopy CGI teaser, and the news that it’s coming to PC, 360 and PS3 in early 2014. Oh, and the notion that you’re solving your own murder. I wasn’t even feeling ill.

Frictional Teases Next Amnesia

By Craig Pearson on February 10th, 2012.

Boo! No, nothing? Y U NO SCARED?
Trouser-colour troublers Frictional Games, makers of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, have dramatically unveiled a website for their next game, pulling aside a metaphorical curtain, making thunder noises with their mouths and flicking the lights on and off. Scared? Nope? You’re just made of steel, aren’t you? I’d have thought a website with a blurry image with the word “Amnesia” on it in scary script and a link to a Google Map of China (click the image, if you dare) would have made you curl up into a ball. So what is going on? Well, I’m afraid I know as much as you do, apart from the two little more bits of information contained below this terrifying jump. Dare you? Mwahahaha…

Brrrrmmmmmmmm: GTR3 Is Now A Thing

By John Walker on December 8th, 2011.

Gee, thanks. Way to make your game seem annoying from the start.

From this astonishingly boring website, it seems there is to be a GTR3. Which is a dull way of announcing good news. More details are hard to come by at this point, as SimBin – currently the only name attached – are maintaining “radio silence” on their forum. So we have just this obscure and tiresome site that seems to be loading something for two minutes, and then doesn’t. And nothing more. The developer of the first two GTRs, Blimey! Games, no longer exists. And the company that replaced it, Slightly Mad Studios, is working on Project CARS for 2013, after offering Shift 2 this year. So will this be developed internally at SimBin, without Ian Bell? We’ve no idea, because they’re being so peculiarly opaque.

And Lo, A Mighty Warrior: Barbarian’s Back

By John Walker on November 9th, 2011.

I remember the screams so weirdly perfectly.

You know what the world is missing? A new Barbarian game.

So there is one. Pointless teaser below.

Quick, Something! Modern Warfare 3 Teasers

By John Walker on May 14th, 2011.

In game title?!?!

It’s been a funny week for leaks and attacks. Deus Ex Human Revolution’s website getting hacked (which does seem a bit like Thief 4′s website getting stolen), an MP leaking a game announcement (which is my favourite embargo break ever – presumably Creative Assembly will be punishing Vaizey by refusing to give him preview code), and then the rather astonishing complete spoil-fest of not only huge amounts of content for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, but even that Modern Warfare 3 exists. Activision and Infinity Ward have sprung into action and created four teaser trailers that confirm it all for themselves. You can watch them below.
