Eden Games Go On Strike Against Atari

By John Walker on May 11th, 2011.

Scenes in France, today.

Eden Games – they behind Test Drive Unlimited 2 and the V-Rally series – and have had enough of their treatment from Atari, and in the face of enormous redundancies at the company and have gone on strike today. GI.biz report that in the face of sackings, the French studio has said enough, and are refusing to work. And they’ve a few choice words to explain why.

Motor Bloat: Test Drive 2 Free DLC Out

By Quintin Smith on May 9th, 2011.

Cars! Aren't they great? Like excitable living rooms.

Joystiq report that the Exploration pack for Test Drive Unlimited 2 has been released! Twenty new missions, two new mission types, two new cars (a Lancia Stratos and Dodge Charger), new clothes to wear and more, as well as a bumload of bugfixes that include “Cars no longer launched into the air by glitches in the road” and “impact with tress is now less severe”. Boo!

My dream online driving game would consist almost entirely of people climbing out of their cars to examine crash damage, their overweight avatars clutching their face in both hands and making noises of unfathomable sadness. Anyway, you’ll find the full feature listing of the Exploration pack after the jump

Test Drive Unlimited 2 Says Sorry, Patches

By John Walker on February 23rd, 2011.

We can see each other now!

You may remember that Test Drive Unlimited 2 did not have a great Valentine’s Day. Launched to cries of, “Er, could you finish it now please?”, its buggy state did not win favour. Eden Games and Atari are attempting a big old “sorry” by offering not only a patch that addresses a lot of issues, but also the first globule of DLC for utterly free. More info lies beneath.

Testing, Testing: Test Drive Unlimited 2 Bugs

By Quintin Smith on February 14th, 2011.

Cars are okay, I guess.

In a surprise move for a videogame, free-roaming racer Test Drive Unlimited 2 “was released” last week, and is now available to buy in shops both real and imaginary the world over. You can read John’s impressions of the beta here. It looks like all is not well in car land, however, as the game’s shipped with some nasty technical issues across all platforms that Atari are currently working to fix. Poor cars.

Some Custom Cars In Test Drive Unlimited 2

By Jim Rossignol on January 25th, 2011.

So I was just having a look at the customization trailer for Test Drive Unlimited 2 (because in my soul I am actually dude in a hoodie driving around my neighbourhood in a noisy hatchback with bucket seats) which you can also see below. And the cars look good. But that’s not what got my attention. It was more that, well, the environments – and particularly the roads – look terrible. Don’t you think? For other, more incisive observations you might want to read John’s full-length hands-on preview, rather than my attention-free prattlings… But anyway, enough random sniping about car games, back to silently watching the timer tick down on the download of Dead Space 2. (Thanks for sending me the 360 version by the way, Electronic Arts! That will find use in a parallel world, I am sure.)

Preview: Test Drive Unlimited 2

By John Walker on January 19th, 2011.

I love checkpoints.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 is due in about a month. I’ve had my hands on some beta code for a couple of days, exploring the racing-meets-affluence world of high-fliers. So if you’d be so polite as to click on, you can hear my early-day thoughts on the matter.

Bit Of Posh: Test Drive Unlimited 2

By John Walker on December 8th, 2010.

A car, yesterday.

Come on open world racing games, smarten up. After the weak Need For Speed World, and the almost great Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, I’m now banking my hopes on next year’s big-money, big-car Test Drive Unlimited 2. The original Test Drive Unlimited also fell into the “almost great” category, so I’m very much hoping to see even more this time. To get an idea of whether that’s happening, there’s a new trailer below.

Most Tranquil: Test Drive’s Ferrari

By Jim Rossignol on October 14th, 2010.

If you are a British motorist, like me, then you are more likely to associate sports cars with Jeremy Clarkson’s sad, frantic clowning than you are any sense of genuine style or chic, which is something of a shame. After all, objects like modern Ferraris really are engineering genius pushed to fetishistic extremes, and I think that’s what Atari and Eden Games are getting at with their rather serene Ferrari trailer for Test Drive Unlimited 2, which you can see below.

It’s looking fairly beautiful, and the promises Eden are making for the dynamic, open world are alluring. The game has been bumped into next year, too, so we will need to wait a bit longer to drive its purported 3000km of roads. (Or indeed the rest of the huge terrain, because there will be off-roading this time around.)

Test Drive Unlimited 2 Gets Environmental

By John Walker on July 7th, 2010.

Those tyres have some grip.

Test Drive Unlimited was great, and not nearly enough people played it. For which you should feel just awful. There’s a sequel coming out on 21st September. Perhaps you’ve already signed up for the beta, checked out the details known so far, and I hope to goodness you’ve read Alec’s review of the original. What you should do today is watch the latest trailer showing off the islands’ environments.

Why To Test Drive Test Drive Unlimited 2

By Alec Meer on June 1st, 2010.

Cheap Punning Rule #48 – if in doubt, tautology. What other Cheap Punning Rules do you know, beautiful readers?

Anyway, the point: Atari has opened up beta signups for its driving/infinite wealth MMO Test Drive Unlimited 2. You should sign up. Why? Because the first TDU was by and large excellent, exploring fascinating and fundamental concepts of virtual-world existence that the vast bulk of MMOs simply ignore. Those being self-indulgence, posing and being completely free of responsibility. Allow me to explain why below.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 Does Beta

By Jim Rossignol on May 28th, 2010.

Car Wot Goes Fast
Interesting times for racing games, what with the fantastical feature sets of Blur and Split/Second, and then open-worldiness descending this summer in the form of Test Drive Unlimited 2 (and, I suppose, in the form of the Need For Speed MMO). Eden Games have sent word that there’s a limited sign up for the beta phase of the new Test Drive Unlimited, although no details on exactly what that entails. Presumably, getting to play some of the game early, and for free, which is reason enough to take a nose. And the game is looking pretty interesting: the same drop-in open world island as before, and – unusually – the ability to get out of the car and walk around. What’s that good for in a racing game? Epic, pointless journeys perhaps? Maybe… Anyway, looks like sign-ups require Atari.com registration. Yay.

Ibiza Uncovered: Test Drive Unlimited 2

By John Walker on May 4th, 2010.

Driving into a supernova requires a large sunblind.

News of Test Drive Unlimited 2 has caught me by surprise, despite its having been announced in March. I’m so good at my job. The original, released on PC in 2007, was an unfairly overlooked driving game set on the Hawaiian island Oʻahu, with 1,000 miles of roads to race about on. What made it so interesting was the population of this island: other players. It was so casual about being an MMO – not shouting and screaming about it, but rather just letting you take part in the many races available, and then on a whim see another car coming toward you, flash your lights at it, and then begin a frenzied race with them for glory. And for money. So much money. Below is the first-look trailer of the sequel, along with Game Trailers’ interview with senior producer, Nour Polloni.
