Alternatingly Current – Tex Murphy: Tesla Effect

By John Walker on February 27th, 2014.

Tex Murphy: Tesla Effect was Kickstarted in June two years ago, and supposed to be released in December 2012. That was always a touch hopeful. However, come December 2013 there was still no indication of a release date, and since then there’s been an ominous quiet. Fortunately that quiet is broken, with Tex “Chris Jones” Murphy releasing a new video to explain the gap. The game, he says, is now the length of two full Tex Murphy adventures.

Tex Murphy: Tesla Effect Has That Name, And A Trailer

By John Walker on July 11th, 2013.

The words “the wait is over” really oughtn’t appear in the same trailer as “coming soon”. That’s made doubly worse when it’s a trailer for a Kickstarted game that was originally due to be released last December. Still, it’s good to see a trailer for the new Tex Murphy: Tesla Effect (no longer “Project Fedora”, you’ll note), and one that confirms that the hammy FMV is precisely as it should be.

Tex Is Back: Project Fedora Receives Its Funding

By John Walker on June 7th, 2012.

Chris Jones may as well change his name to Tex Murphy, since I'm barely willing to acknowledge they're different people.

So Tex Murphy will be back. The Kickstarter for the FMV adventure series’ return, Project Fedora, looked wobbly for a while, especially when aiming for a mighty $450,000, but with some pretty inventive updating they’ve managed to tiptoe over the line with still over a week to go.

Chris Jones Talks Tex: Bringing Back Tex Murphy

By John Walker on May 22nd, 2012.

Sans fedora. It's like Superman and Clark Kent.

As the current trend to Kickstart every adventure series I loved in the 90s continues, I jumped upon the opportunity to speak to Tex Murphy himself, Chris Jones. With the new FMV-driven noir science fiction adventure already well over halfway to its half-million goal, there’s cause to be optimistic for Big Finish Games’ project, Project Fedora, going ahead. And as Jones reveals, his team are putting in quarter of a million of their own money too. We talk about bringing Tex back, updating the genre for a modern audience, and why Jones believes FMV characters can connect to players in a way CG ones never can.

Kickstarter Katchup

By John Walker on May 19th, 2012.

All of the money.

This makes sense as a thing to do. With so many gaming Kickstarters running, for games we’re genuinely interested to play, let’s have a look to see where they all are this weekend. The headline news is that Grim Dawn has finished its run, with just shy of double its target reached. Below you can catch up on Moebius, Xenonauts, Tex Murphy, and many more. And you can also note that almost all of them aren’t pledging to Kick It Forward, which completely sucks, so you should get in touch with them all and yell at them.

Your Tuesday Kickstarter: Tex Murphy – Project Fedora

By John Walker on May 15th, 2012.

The hat over the greying hair and you'd never know a day had passed.

For people with no interest in adventures, this Kickstarter revolution must be increasingly frustrating. Certainly there’s a decent smattering of RPGs in there too, but I always like to think of those as adventures with combat. For those who grew up playing adventures in the late 80s, early 90s however, this is like a mad dream. The latest beloved franchise to attempt a comeback is the Tex Murphy series, reincarnating the sardonic private eye in, well, just about exactly the same way he appeared nearly two decades ago.
