Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena

By Jim Rossignol on May 18th, 2009.

It’s taken me a while to get around to Starbreeze’s remake and expansion of Chronicles Of Riddick, but I’ve finally punched and stabbed my way through it. The original game is one of my favourite olden FPS games, as detailed here, but can this contemporary-tech revamp and sizable sequel live up to the legacy? Here’s Wot I Think.

Riddick Footage Aplenty

By Jim Rossignol on January 22nd, 2009.

One of 2009’s more interesting FPS projects is Assault On Dark Athena, which is both a remake of the original Chronicles Of Riddick and also its sequel. The titular Dark Athena section follows on from the first game, and takes place aboard some kind of crazy spacelane pirating merc ship, onto which the begoggled space murderer finds his way. I was lucky enough to preview this for PC Gamer UK recently, and I was fairly impressed with what I saw. GameTrailers meanwhile have managed to get even more exclusive access to the game, with a huge, two-part developer walkthrough. I’ve embedded the two videos beyond the jump for your perusal.

Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on December 4th, 2008.

Earlier in the year we talked about just how good Chronicles Of Riddick was. Astonishingly, the Riddick game to be released next year, Assault On Dark Athena, is not only a complete remake of that original game in Starbreeze’s modern engine, but also its sequel, with a full-length campaign of new man-butchering material. The debut trailer for this delectable double whammy is after the jump. If you’re interested, I’ve written more on my first look at the game in next month’s PC Gamer UK.

(Fans of the original game should see how many scenes from that they recognise in the trailer.)

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena

By Jim Rossignol on October 30th, 2008.

Those of you who joined with us in remembering the excellence of The Chronicles Of Riddick might be pleased to learn that developers Starbreeze are returning to the sci-fi world with a full new campaign. The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena was originally announced as a remake of the first game with modern tech and knobs on, but will now include an all-new campaign-length amount of material. The stealth and neck-breaking will be back (Back!) only this time aboard some kind of troublesome mercenary ship called Dark Athena. Vin Diesel will naturally be making the requisite grunts and murderous mutterings. Atari are publishing, and it’s scheduled for early next year.

Full press release after the jump.

Retro: The Chronicles Of Riddick

By Jim Rossignol on August 18th, 2008.

One particular game seems to have come up a great deal in our gaming discussions from the past couple of months, and so I decided it was time to go back and play it. 2004’s The Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay (TCOREFBR?) is one of those games that sits at the back of my mind, silently benchmarking everything else that has appeared since. It is one of those action games that really doesn’t seem to have had much influence over the course of gaming, and yet is a splendid comparative high-watermark for anything with guns, or fists. Weirdly, for a first-person action game, the fists are actually what is most important.
