Wot I Think: The Darkness II

By John Walker on February 9th, 2012.

That was a bad scarf choice.

First-person shooter The Darkness II is out in the US, and tomorrow in the UK, and I’ve played it through to the gruesome end. Past the gruesome beginning, via the gruesome middle. How does all that grue hold up? Well, wipe away the lung and take a seat, and I’ll tell you Wot I Think.

The Darkness II’s Tentacular Executions

By Craig Pearson on February 1st, 2012.

I wish for innards!
The Darkness II is violent. How violent? It has executions, but it has different categories of them. CataGOREies, if you will. This pair of trailers is part of series showing what you can pull off. Mostly limbs, it seems.

Delicately Debating Darkness II’s Demo

By Alec Meer on January 17th, 2012.

Our Adam was supposed to be taking a look at the Darkness II right about now for a last preview before release, but he’s caught the bubonic plague or something and is currently desperately trying to stop his remaining organs from falling out of his body. So, in lieu of that, I’ve had a go at the demo that appeared on Xbox BOO Live HISS earlier today. It is due on PC, but Xbox FOR SHAME Live THE HORROR has an exclusive for a week, so we have to wait. What, exactly, are we waiting for? Well, when my 360 stopped red-ringing and managed to stay functional for a half-hour, I endeavoured to find out, by way of a prelude to the PC’s own demo.

Immediate thought: it’s so noisy! It’s so sweary! It’s so violent! Does old man Doom know that his kids have turned out like this? After all that sound and fury, I want to curl up in a corner and read Jane Austen books until I feel civilised again.

Two weapons good; four weapons betterWhat are you doing on Jan the 24th? Apart from celebrating the ten day anniversary of my 33rd birthday, I mean? I will be playing The Darkness II demo on Steam, weeping at how it’s only 11 and a bit months until I’m 34.

The Darkness II Co-Op Contains Festive Fun

By Adam Smith on December 20th, 2011.

Imagine I've photoshopped in a Santa hat. Japes!

It’s all sleigh bells ring-a-ding-jingling and jolly little scamps scurrying about the place in search of the true meaning of Christmas in these latest trailers for The Darkness II. Except for all the evisceration, shooting-in-the-face and limb-lopping, which is what you’ll see for every single second that isn’t a series of logos angrier than Mr Angrylad Furyface from Hateville, Nebraskinforabeating. That actually leaves precisely no room for festive fun of the seasonal variety, but plenty for those who celebrate the cathartic kiss of axe and intestine. These are the murderous folk available in the recently revealed co-op mode.

The Darkness II Gets 4-Player Co-Op Reveal

By Jim Rossignol on December 6th, 2011.

Not only will it be four-player co-op, but The Darkness II‘s co-op will be “interwoven” with the main story (although that story itself is NOT playable co-op). The co-operative missions apparently branch off from the single player plot and allow the players to explore other environments that are connected to the story of the core game. And there was me think it’d be a mode where we got to control one Darkness tentacle each! Tsk. You can check out the full co-op reveal trailer below.

Man-Shoot, -Slice, -Sling: The Darkness II

By Adam Smith on October 3rd, 2011.

If a man really had demons growing out of his shoulders, people would just run away

What mad form of ultraviolence will I be introduced to next, I often wonder. This time it’s quad wielding in The Darkness 2, making me realise it wasn’t long ago that dual wielding was an exciting prospect thought to be possible only in John Woo films, but then Rise of the Triad came along with its guns akimbo and ludicrous gibs. Judging by this new video, The Darkness 2 won’t disappoint on either the gore or the preposterous death-dealing fronts. With a gun in each hand and murderous tentacles sprouting from his flesh, Jackie Estacado can rip the door off a car and cut a goon’s face off with it while firing two automatic weapons, or ensnare an unruly gangsster, casually lob him into the air, and then fill him with bullets before he hits the floor. If you don’t believe these things are possible, watch and learn.

Alvy Singer Presents The Darkness II

By Alec Meer on September 26th, 2011.

'Quite Dark II', I call it

If you’re one of those oxygen-wasting oiks who feels compelled to snarkily observe upon the relative advanced age of things you see on the internet, a) do be quiet b) team RPS has been busy attending the EG Expo and then The Wedding of Walker so we’re still catching up with all the gameosity that bobbed to the surface of this endless electronic ocean over the last few days. Next is a story trailer for 2K/Digital Extremes’ demonic manshooter/manmangler The Darkness II. Which reminds me, I still need to write a preview about this based on what I saw of it at Gamescom. My notes mostly just say ‘IT’S SO NOISY’ repeatedly, though. Then there are some damp, streaky marks that I can only imagine are tear-stains. Which is odd, given I wrote those notes on a laptop.

Da Darkness Deux Delayed

By Alec Meer on July 20th, 2011.

But will it be darker in February than in October?

If in doubt, alliteration. Don’t worry about the terrible harm it might wreak upon the English language – your reward will come in pun-heaven. Or hell. So hard to tell the difference these days.

Anyway, just a quickie for you, missus: spooky-tentacle ‘em up the Darkness II has been delayed. It’s slipping from this October to February 2012.

Tentacular: The Darkness II Preview

By Dan Grill on July 6th, 2011.

Hello, Darkness, My Old Friend.

The Darkness, Starbreeze’s 2008 shooter, was unusual in many ways. Though it was violent, it wasn’t defined by this violence. It had a strong sense of place, a grimly entertaining story and a variety of gameplay. Anyone who sat with the protagonist’s girlfriend for the last time and watched To Kill A Mockingbird until she fell asleep on his/your shoulder couldn’t fault the fineness of the storytelling. The many side-quests you could get in the NYC underground station (jumping on the tracks to grab nickels, scaring off punks) cleared it up; this was a very pure FPS-RPG, guns and conversation perfected, unusually without compromising the shooter or the story.

So, so much for the original; how about the sequel?

The Darkness 2 Trailer Puts Nails In

By Jim Rossignol on June 2nd, 2011.

Hmm, that smarts.
It has started. The flood of E3 trailers has begun. Below you can watch the first in-game trailer for The Darkness 2, which features people being brutally evisecarated by black tentacles. There’s also a lovely scene where the protagonist is being nailed to a door or something. It’s not pleasant. Fortunately I’ve also embedded a video of a cat cuddling a sleeping kitten, just in case you require an antidote to seeing metal spikes being hammered through your hands.
