The Organ Trail: Director’s Cut is a zombie pastiche of the old favourite edugame, The Oregan Trail, where you had to manage a family of settlers as they travelled to Portland, Oregon, past the perils of the unconquered western USA. In the Organ Trail, players must get themselves and up to four friends all the way to Portland Oregon without losing any of their innards to rampaging zombie hordes. Can a group of RPS writers survive the trail and how many of their innards will they leave behind?

There a phrases that can put a man off a game. Like “retro graphics” and “zombie”. But you’re not to let that do that here. The Organ Trail is very much The Oregon Trail, the mostly-text-based game that was first created in the early 70s, with the bandits are replaced by zombies. But what you’ve got here is an extremely compelling, extremely tough little simulator, and one that should keep you enthralled for hours.

The annoyingly obvious (why didn’t I think of it?) zombie take on Oregon Trail is now out on PC. Properly. Like you pay money and it downloads. The Organ Trail is a cross-country retro romp where you make the decisions that’ll make, but mostly break, the group of survivors as they trip through ruins of America. For something so simple it remains compelling. A hunt for supplies that takes place in zombie-filled cites about to be nuked. Everything is against you.

Or whatever the hell it is today’s supposed to be about. I carved a pumpkin and went to a shop with some cobwebs in the window. Is that suitably Halloweenoriffic for you?
Oh, and I also played The Organ Trail – which, as the name suggests, is a remake of The Oregon Trail, but neatly documenting a deadly drive to apparent safe haven during a zombie apocalypse. Time, food, fuel, ammo and medicine are survival mainstays as in the original telling, but the Romerian narrative fits this perfectly. You’ll like this one – go forth and drive through the walking dead, you wretched human survivor, you.
You have died of dysentery, then come back to life and eaten your wife’s brains.
