Premature Evaluation: The Political Machine 2016

As ugly as the democratic process can sometimes be, it still has one or two advantages over hereditary monarchy. After all, even the most craven and corrupt politician requires some sort of conniving wherewithal to get into power, though this far from guarantees that they will use it to any decent end. This said - and as The Political Machine suggests - the importance of money and mass-media in the States has eroded the need for any other credential, and with shitbubbles like Trump in the running, you have to wonder if the mixture of inherited wealth and empty celebrity he embodies really does much to set himself apart from the sort of high-born cretins who too frequently took the throne in centuries past.

Each week Marsh Davies unleashes a patriotic aquiline shriek and swoops upon the home of the brave that is Early Access, bringing freedom by way of cash-purchased endorsements and glib media-ready soundbites to all he meets. This week, these skills will hopefully propel him all the way to the White House in The Political Machine 2016 [Steam page], a timely update of the presidential campaign strategy game in which candidates scoot between states, bellowing platitudes to the credulous and smarming their way through interviews while doing everything to sabotage their opponents.

The Political Machine 2016 Sims Presidential Pratfalls

Half the fun of politics simulators is that you get to mess about and see how silly you can be without your head ending up atop a pike. Every four years, Stardock simulate the US presidential election with their Political Machine, but I don’t know if it’s worth the effort this time. What a lineup of jokers, eh? Games couldn’t be sillier than the real race, right? Yeah? Little bit of politics there ladies and gentlemen, little bit of politics.

If you fancy hitting the campaign trail, The Political Machine 2016 [official site] is out… in Early Access? Ooh, this modern world!

Wot I Think: The Political Machine 2012

It’s election fever! Well, election ennui. As the disappointingly over-cautious incumbent takes on a billionaire charisma-vacuum for rights to the throne of America, Stardock release an update of their presidential wannabe sim. I’ve been creeping around the corridors of power in The Political Machine 2012 for the last couple of days. Join me in the west wing for a post-mortem, won’t you?

WIN: The Political Machine 2008, Plus Loot

Read onwards for details on how to win including copies of American disaster presidential election simulator The Political Machine 2008 and another noise-buffing Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Platinum – Fatal1ty Champion Edition soundcard. Alec wrote about the game just here.

And yes, it’s another UK-only competition, I’m afraid. (Don’t blame us! Blame the boring old US companies who don’t seem to love our 120,000-strong US readership! Yeah. American companies: send us compo prizes!)

Clickwards for details on how to enter. We’ve also got the details of the Geo-Political Simulator compo winners below. Yes.

The Free Free World: The Political Machine Express

Political satire and turn-based strategy: a surprisingly winning combination. Stardock have just chucked out a free version of their lovely The Political Machine 2008, which is essentially a demo in all but name. It is, however, the part of the game that everyone wants to play the most: Obama vs Mcain. With staunch support from Joe Biden and the pitbull with lipstick, of course. Many of the full game’s features, such as design it yourself candidates and randomised issues, are missing, but multiplayer’s in there. Grab it from here.

Oh, here’s me semi-Verdicting the full game a little while ago. If you do already own TPM08, it’s worth grabbing the recent 1.5 update – not least because it adds Palin and Biden, but also because it ups the variety of what was a slightly shallow game. You have to get it through Stardock’s Impulse thinger, which is something I’ve yet to form a definite feeling about. Interesting, but it hasn’t wormed its way into my life/PC like Steam has. It’s very early days for it, of course.

I Made Dick Cheney President

What have I done?

I’ve done a bad thing. A baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad thing. I’ve made One Of The Most Evil Men In The World president of the USA. Dick Cheney now has the keys to the planet, with staunch support from his Vice-President Lord Krona, who is a brain-washing tyrant from Mars. Or is that Cheney again? I get confused.

It might be an insane, broken system, but American politics is so much more fascinating than British politics at the moment. I may not be able to vote over there, but I can play The Political Machine 2008.
