Some More Heroes: COH Expands Again

Written by Alec Meer on November 5, 2008.

It feels a little odd to be talking about RTS expansion packs on the morning after the election night before. However, outside the window of my Seattle hotel room is a building site that looks straight out of Mirror’s Edge (complete with eye-catchingly red and yellow scaffolding), from which brickies stare at me with that particular malevolence that bemuscled men have fixed upon skinny men with spectacles since time immemorial, so I think “yeah, the world’s still the world” and turn my mind to Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor after all.

Red Faction, Fresh Explosioneering For 2009

Written by Jim Rossignol on October 18, 2008.

As conoisseurs of The Explosion we are keen to sample both new blends and vintage detonations. Red Faction: Guerrilla is a fresh formulation of popular a traditional recipe, and it’s looking no less delicious for that. The footage that follows shows off RFG’s multiplayer action, where many explosions occur, thanks to the trademark destructible scenery, the giant guns, and men with excellent jetpacks. Any series of explosions that can be topped off with a dude escaping the blast on a jetpack is okay by us.

Dawn of War II: Space Marines

Written by Jim Rossignol on October 8, 2008.

I’ve posted an oddly low-key GameTrailers game trailer after link: Dawn of War II’s Space Marine campaign walkthrough. It’s narrated - in a manly way - by the game’s commanding lead designer chap, Jonny Ebbert. Ebbert is very tall, and he also knows a few things about making things explode in a manner which entertains the exploder. In this trailer he discusses DoWII’s unique squad abilities, the use of cover, and the role of the heroes units in the game world. It’s impressive stuff. But not as impressive as the orbital bombardment.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II will be out in Spring 2009.

This Sporting Life: NBA & WWE On PC

Written by Alec Meer on October 1, 2008.

I would love to talk to these men about poetry

My writing this post is probably fairly akin to David Beckham talking about Dungeon Keeper 2, but thought I’d aggregate a couple of sporting links kindly folk have sent us lately. There’s been a trend over the last few years to stop porting B-list (and I mean that in the polite sense) games to PC, most especially sports titles. However, we’re seeing something of a porting rennaissance at the moment - for every publisher/developer who claims they’re washing their hands of PC due to the P word, another seems to redouble their efforts to release everything they’ve got on it. Capcom are an impressive example of the latter with stuff like Street Fighter 4, but seems like 2K and THQ are returning to our loving arms too.

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine, first footage

Written by Jim Rossignol on September 5, 2008.

Via VG247 we discover that a couple of Czech sites are hosting the first footage of THQ’s third-person action title Warhammer 40k: Space Marine. The piece seems to narrated by someone from the dev team, who shows off a load of in-game footage, and employs excessive use of the word “cinemaction”. The game is reportedly coming out on PC and consoles, and we think that’s a fairly safe bet. Only War, after the jump.

Dawn of War II: Tyranids At Play, and IRL Rhino

Written by Alec Meer on August 29, 2008.

DOW2 was already looking like the RTS to get our collective knickers in a twist about, but the recent revelation of hot Tyranid action really sets our nerdish hearts a-flutter. Here they are in living technicolour, together with the game’s (slightly nervous, bless his socks) Lead Designer Jonny Ebbert talking about the thinking behind them, and how Relic kept the ‘nids’ inclusion a secret all this time. They’re “the most special race in the universe”, apparently. I know I wouldn’t call a Carnifex ’special’ to his face. Oh, and their behaviour’s inspired by Jurassic Park, oddly.

Video beneath the cut, plus photos of a real-life Rhino transport.

Tyranid-Get

Written by Alec Meer on August 19, 2008.

You knew it, we knew it, but God it’s nice to really know it. Dawn of War II will definitely, definitely feature Tyranids, as evidenced by Relic’s making an already splendid CGI trailer even more splendid:

Drooling chitinous spacebeasts have never been so hot. Edit - in-game footage here.

E3: The Trailers - Dawn of War II. Tyranids?

Written by Alec Meer on July 15, 2008.

Normally I have no time for cinematic trailers. Show me the game. This one, though, is oodles of bloody fun. Especially the Dreadnaut flambĂ© scene. And what’s that sky-swarm thingy at the end? Could it be? Could it really be… Tyranids? Let there be much rejoicing. (It may just be video blur, but I’m feeling wishful. And ‘oh, it’s Chaos again’ just wouldn’t seem to suit that sort of dramatic cliffhanger. Also, see beneath the cut for further, and very strong corroboration that ‘They’ are indeed our much-desired Big Uglies).

Read on for more ‘nid hints…

Dawn Of War II: E3 Trailer, New Race Unveiled

Written by Jim Rossignol on July 12, 2008.

With real game footage! Cor, imagine a trailer that actually showed you what the game engine looked like as someone played it. I know, it’s a radical idea, but Relic have gone and done it. It also reveals one of the other races that will come with the game, and let’s just say that they’re not exactly shattering the mould with this one.

Red Faction Guerrilla Footage

Written by Jim Rossignol on June 24, 2008.

Destructo-scenery specialists Volition have been talking about their new game, the third Red Faction title, including an explanation of their reasons for pulling the camera into third-person. Apparently it makes seeing all that destruction a little more satisfying. What we know so far is that it’s going to be an “open-world shooter” set on Mars, so there’s a little less linearity to your smashing of glass, shattering of concrete, and other Martian geo-mod guerrilla behaviour.

That footage beyond the click.
