Turn-Based Cyberninja Action: Ronin Out Of Early Access

You're about to get stabbed, son.

I dug the demo of turn-based stealth-o-swordfighter Ronin [official site], and the more-complete Steam Early Access version that Marsh prematurely evaluated sounded even better. It’s a clever blend of real-time sneaking with gadgets then simultaneous turn-based sword combat when that goes tits-up, turning fights into careful ballet of thrown blades and dodged bullets. Playing it made me feel like the coolest cyberpunk assassin, which is of course the highest class of murderer.

I’ve been waiting for the full release before picking it up, and today it finally arrived.

Premature Evaluation: Ronin

It’s doubly tricky to avoid setting off alarms in Ronin because the levels occasionally repopulate with extra enemies who stumble upon your trail of corpses - corpses which you have no means of hiding. This is a terrible shame because furtively stacking corpses in closets is my number one favourite thing to do in stealth games, and probably also number one in the list of macabre game mechanics that you should not admit to enjoying loudly in public.

Each week Marsh Davies slices open Early Access like the soft belly of a hapless Yakuza goon and roots around inside for any stories he can find. This week he’s playing Ronin – a game about infiltrating 2D-cutaway buildings and dicing their occupants up via a sharp-as-hell turnbased combat system.

“Tip: this is not Gunpoint,” says a little message on the screen. It’s not wrong. While playing Gunpoint, for example, I never punched my monitor so hard that it flickered to a blank white for several seconds, during which I fearfully grovelled in apology to the gods. Ronin is heavily inspired by Gunpoint, however – a fact which, to forestall the needlessly defensive cries of “Clone!”, seems to delight Gunpoint’s creator, my good chum Tom Francis. And regardless of its origins, Ronin now plays really quite differently (not least because of the tantrum-inducing lack of a manual save system). You can still leap across moonlit rooftops in elegant parabolas, scuttle up the sides of skyscrapers and sling yourself through their plate glass windows, but, once inside, the player’s purpose is less about open-ended stealth puzzling than it is strategic slaughter.

Stealthy Cybermurder: Ronin Demo

Gonna gut some cybermen.

Ronin [official site] is a cool game about cool stealthy murders. It’s a stealth ‘em up about a futureninja taking down a megacorp, hiding in the shadows and striking unseen, then whipping out the ole cybersword and dancing around murdering everyone in simultaneous turn-based cybercombat once you get busted. Chuck Mark of the Ninja, half a cup of rain, Gunpoint, and a neon tube into your mindblender – then step back – and you’ll get the idea.

Or you could play the demo. The game’s not due until May but somehow, some way, the demo has arrived first (cyberninja magic, probably), stepping out of the shadows onto Steam.

Swordpoint: Turn-based Stealthjumpstabs In Ronin

Wanna... hang out?

The turn-based sneaking, leaping, climbing, stabbing, swinging, and sword-flinging of Ronin caught our eye last August with a free prototype, and my it’s come a long way since then! A new trailer shows slick sequences of its cyberninja scaling buildings, smashing through windows, dodging bullets, and stabbing the heck out of cybermen. Tomasz Waclawek’s game caught the keen eye of publishers Devolver Digital too, as they’ve announced they’re helping bring Ronin to release later this year, fleshed-out and fancied-up. Really, come see how cool this murder looks:

The sun. The glorious EGA sun. Let us all salute it!

Looking for an excellent, stealthy murder simulator? Lucky you, then, for here’s Ronin to cater to your every (virtual) killing whim; a game that’s pure of heart and doesn’t really bother with formalities. Or a plot. A game that simply wants to entertain you and help you hone those subtly tactical mouse and keyboard skills.
