Magical: Trine Conjures Up Online Co-op In Engine Switch

I remember Trine as being awfully pretty but no, apparently it wasn’t pretty enough for developers Frozenbyte (and, having now returned to the game, it seems my memory’s not quite what it was). They’re porting Trine over to the Trine 2 engine, giving the puzzle-platformer a fairytale makeover and its sequel’s online co-op.

While Frozenbyte may disappearing off on their summer hols soon and don’t know quite when it’ll be finished, they’ve released a beta version so we can all argue with Skypepals over who gets to be the Wizard. (Tip: start this argument then sigh “Fine, I’ll be the Thief” because actually she is the best. Thank the pro-wizard lobbying of Idle Thumbs, I guess.)

Humble Indie Bundle 9 Is Go(od)

The Colour Of Money: Trine 2 DLC And Sale

I remember a review of Zhang Yimou’s Hero which claimed that almost any frame from the film would be worthy of hanging in a gallery. Hyperbolic perhaps but it was a motion picture not afraid to include all of the the colours, frequently in astonishing arrangements. Similarly rich in palette, Trine 2 brings a beauty all its own to the fields and frozen wastes that are so well-trodden by hordes of wizards and warriors. It’s truly fantastic fantasy art and I’d happily watch a slideshow of both its spectacles and subtleties for hours. All that beauty can be yours for £2.99 this weekend on Steam, which is less than you’d spend on a postcard of a hill. The Goblin Menace DLC is also available now and at £5.09 actually costs more than the game at the moment.

The Blood And The Beautiful – Trine 2: Goblin Menace

It's so beautiful that I want to lick it. Is that weird? I'm pretty sure it's not weird.

Truth be told, I’m not entirely sure how goblins – lumpy, stumpy little monstrosities – can exist in Trine 2‘s world. I mean, I have to imagine it’s like a snowman going for a stroll on the sun; we’re talking about two entirely opposing forces, and one has to give. So naturally, you’d assume ugly ol’ goblins would immediately explode into flame volcanoes when exposed to Trine’s blindness-curing beauty. And yet, they’re still alive and kicking – and menacing, no less. Looking Fine: Trine 2 Expansion

Give it a name already, Frozenbyte, so I don’t have to refer to it as ‘expansion’ or ‘DLC’. I’m going for the former because it reminds me of the good old days, as do Frozenbyte themselves. Why am I posting about this gain so soon, having already written about the new areas, new plotline and new abilities? Because there’s a short video showing some environments and short videos showing Trine environments are among my favourite things in the world. Prettier than all the other game-pretties would be if they were baked up together in a pretty little pie, Trine 2 has the kind of world I’d gladly adventure in and then stick around to have a picnic.

Trine And Trine Again: Trine 2 DLC

Even before Trine 2 launched, Frozenbyte had plans to work on DLC, saying toward the end of last year that the additional content would be about four hours in length. A few details were revealed to some non-PC folk at GDC, including word of a new story that will take place over six stages, which will have puzzles based around light, water, low gravity and magnets. There will also be new skills. Expect the DLC in summer but don’t expect Trine 3 anytime soon, as Frozenbyte’s next title will be something altogether new. I haven’t played Trine 2 yet, despite the sense of contentment and joy that still washes over me whenever I see it in motion.

GOG, NVIDIA, Frozenbyte, Notch vs SOPA

Trine 2 Demonstrated, On Macputer Too!

Listen, I know you are a busy person, so I’ll just leave this link here. It’s the Steam page for Trine 2. There’s a demo on there. It works on PC and Mac. It’s about as pretty as that pretty girl from your halcyon schooldays, you know, the one carved out of pretty, with nice hair. It really is that pretty. Read more about the game in this fine review, and then perhaps play yourself? Eh? Why not, it’s Saturday, after all. I don’t really believe you are that busy. You’ve probably got the day off.

Dammit Jim, I'm a magician not a doctor

Frozenbyte’s magicky puzzler Trine 2 materialised on the internet a couple of days ago, having apparently not received the message that the industry isn’t allowed to release any videogames after the last week of November. I for one am glad of this flagrant rule-breaking, and have spent a while in its world of colour and physics. Here’s what I made of it. Also: group hug!

I feel good! I feel great, in fact. Trine 2′s ability to bring about instant tranquility has been oft-documented on this blog, but for once I’m not talking about its pretty colours, dreamy music and general air of goodwill. I’m taking about its puzzles.

Don’t Pine For Trine 2

Cos Frozenbyte’s proper-lovely tri-person puzzle-platformer finally has a concrete release date, after a few months of to-ing and fro-ing in beta. And it’s tomorrow! Oh dear, has this become one of those announcement of an announcement posts? People get cross about those, you know.

No, I think it’s OK – as it’s pretty unusual form to announce the release date of your game two days before it happens.

The Lights Fantastic: Trine 2 Preview

FrozenByte’s ethereally-lit follow-up to their Lost Vikings-esque puzzle-platformer has been sitting temptingly on my hard drive for several weeks now, but my Skyrim habit has kept me from until today. I was still feeling a little raw after the freneticism of Serious Sam 3 and an unfortunate chilli-burn incident that temporarily cost me the use of my hands, but Trine 2‘s main menu alone is a balm for the soul if ever there was one. I’ve put a little time into the beta version – not enough for some sort of cast-iron verdict, but enough to go ‘d’awwwwwwwwwww’ and offer a few early observations.

Skeletons And Spiders: Trine 2 Screenshots

Oh, my, that really is gorgeous

I was operating under the belief that everything was beautiful in Trine 2′s world, whether the rushes growing by a crystal clear pool or the giant mushrooms with a candle’s light casting a glow from their interior. And then they went and showed me a bloody spider. It’s a right horrible one as well, with segmented legs thicker than a bemuscled torso. Thankfully, the other three new screenshots don’t contain anything repulsive, unless you’re particularly offended by beautiful fantasy environments. Are you? Colours Of Magic: Trine 2

when you get blue and you've lost all your dreams there's nothin' like a campfire and a can of beans

No matter how many words are rattling around in my head like angry wasps, footage of Trine 2 tends to soothe me to the extent that only synonyms for ‘pretty’ exist, along with the bare essentials to string those synonyms into sentences. It’s a bonny game, which makes something as simple as a box falling apart seem like the culmination of a particularly gentle and picturesque fairy tale. The footage below highlights the Unlimited game mode, which allows co-operative play with characters of the same class, allowing three thieves to swing through resplendent forests, or three wizards to calmly rearrange the delicate and comely features of the world.
