Tragedy And Tourism In Tropico 4

By Alec Meer on June 20th, 2011.

The colour, it burrrns

Tropico! We can all get behind a spot of sun-drenched dictatordom, right? Not to mention a timely reminder, in this ‘social’ age of limited moves per day and microtransactions, of city-building unbound. After a brief delay, Tropico 4 is due in just two months, and appears to push ruling an island wannabe-paradise to extremes both good (rollercoasters, giant spires with eternal flames at the top) and bad (apocalypse-level natural disasters)…

Absolute Power Corrupts?

By Jim Rossignol on March 2nd, 2010.

Hopefully just your moral character, and not your hard-disk, as Absolute Power is the expansion for Tropico 3. Interesting one this, because I hadn’t heard much of the game after release so I had to wonder how well it had done for sales. Turns out it did this many: enough for an immediate expansion pack. How many is that? I just don’t know. Anyway, Absolute Power includes a “new campaign featuring 10 missions on a separate map with 10 islands which are also available in sandbox mode”, and an archipelago of additional buildings, roads, and other island-forming stuff. There are also new factions, and other bits to spice up the political side of things. No sign of an official web page for this yet, but the release date is approximately “summer”.

Wot I Think: Tropico 3

By Jim Rossignol on November 11th, 2009.

The third Tropico game, this time developed by Haemimont games, has finally washed up on the perfect beaches of my interest. Having messed around with it for a few days, I’ve found time to issue a diktat. Here’s Wot I Think.

Desert Island Fisc(al Policy): Tropico 3 Demo

By Jim Rossignol on September 11th, 2009.

A lovely sunny demo has arrived on the shores of the internet: it’s for banana-republican management sequel Tropico 3! It’s 1.1gb in girth, and can be downloaded from here. As in previous games, you take the mantle of a benevolent dictator of a small island, and try to make the wheels of monopolistic money practices turn for both you and your citizens. The demo contains the tutorial and two missions from the full game, so it should give you a decent taste of how the full thing pans out. Have a play, let us know your thoughts.

Tropical Tropico 3 Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on May 28th, 2009.

Recollections of the Tropico games rapidly disappeared into the hazy history of tycoon games, but they were nevertheless remarkably playable at the time. I’m glad that Kalypso Media have decided to support a third iteration of the series, developed by Haemimont Games. I hope the Bulgarian team can get the tone of it right – their recent Grand Ages: Rome was pretty and playable, but ultimately frustrating, with a poorly-conceived micromanagement system. It looks like they’re aiming to create Tropico 3 using a buffed up version of the rather proficient Grand Ages: Rome technology, as you can see from the teaser below. The world’s friendliest dictatorship is scheduled for release in September.

Tropico 3: Dictate Your Thoughts

By John Walker on November 17th, 2008.

No screenshots yet.

Here’s a story that got lost in our weekend of commenty madness. Reader John reminded us it was announced on Friday that Kalypso, a publisher of Sins of a Solar Empire and Gal Civ II, had acquired the rights to the Tropico series from Take 2. The consequences of this being the declaration that there will be a Tropico 3.

To be developed by Haemimont Games, the Bulgarian studio behind Glory of the Roman Empire and Imperivm – Great Battles Of Rome, they’re currently suggesting a Summer 2009 release.
