Wot I Think: Tropico 5

Tropico 5 doesn’t deviate far from the series’ blueprint – real-time city-building on an initially low-tech, low-wealth Caribbean island, with you playing the role of a cartoonish dictator who’s as benign or malign as you care to be, now with a revamped campaign mode and added multiplayer.

I’ve spent a big chunk of this week with it, and have now left its sun-kissed beaches and mouldering tenements to bring you the following report. If it matters, I skipped Tropico 4 so can’t tell you anything about how it compares to that.

Desktop Despots: Tropico 5 Beta Begins Next Month

New Tropico games aren’t appearing as quickly as my brain thinks. This is simply that I now perceive time at such a pace that the world is a dizzying blur around me. If you’d held a knifegun to my headthroat and demanded a release date for Tropico 4, I’d have tried to second-guess myself and suggested late 2012. It was in fact August 2011, and I am an old, confused man, unsure why the Christmasses won’t stop happening. Anyway, my confused rambling aside, Tropico 5 is appearing a very appropriate three years after the last time El Presidente reared his undemocratic city building head, and is now accepting applications for its March beta.

The Little Scamp: Tropico 5 Announced

The Tropico 5 announcement teaser, below, is a re-enactment of a splendid scene from Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator. Much like a devilishly handsome sewage worker or agonisingly attractive abbattoir attendant, Chaplin was quite the looker when stripped of the greasy remnants of his trade. Dapper. And he could have been a scruffy hearthrob singer-songwriter too, given the right knitwear and a battered old guitar. Perhaps the same is true of El Presidente, Tropico’s dictator. Trim the beard, swap the uniform for something svelte and scrub away the decades of corruption, and let’s see what we have…OH!
