Trove’s First Update Charts Rise Of The Shadow Tower

Trove [official site] smooshes together ideas from Minecraft and MMOs to create a colourful, frenetic, particle-effect-explosion of a game. That might be your thing or it might make you need to have a lie down, as it did ol’ man Meer. If you’re the former group: good news! The game’s first update since launch was just released, and there’s a video introducing it below.

Atlas Reactor: Turn-Based Tactics From Trove Devs

Trion Worlds, the crew most notable for MMOs Defiance and Trove, have turned their attention to the small scale. Well, comparatively anyway. The studio’s been working on a new free-to-play, team-based, turn-based tactical combat team called Atlas Reactor [official site], an amalgamation of XCOM tactics with Overwatch aesthetic, from the look of it. Check it out for yourself after the jump.

Why Loads Of People Are Playing Trove (& Why I’m Not)

“We should look at Trove,” mused RPS’s Dark Gods. “Hundreds of thousands of people are playing it, so there must be something interesting about it. You, Thrall Meer, go investigate.” I gazed at Trove’s key art, sneered at how it looked like someone tried to remake Minecraft out of fossilised blancmange and then stuck 1980s sweets all over it, and despaired. Then I went in, and I found out why it’s so popular.

Action-RPG-y Minecraftbut Trove Launched

If you fancy a game that’s like Minecraft but action-RPG-y, perhaps have a gander at Trove [official site]. After a stretch of open beta, Rift developers Trion Worlds released their own Minecraftbut this week. It’s like Minecraft but more of an AMMORPG (as we agreed we should refer to MMO action-RPGs), with character classes, abilities, dungeons, loot, and so on.

It’s free to play, available from its site.

Cube Cube Rift Craft World: Trove In Open Beta

Look, I clearly have more cubes than that other game's cubeman.

What happens when an MMORPG studio makes a Minecraftbut game? You can see for yourself now, as Trion Worlds launched Trove into open beta testing last night. The Rift and Defiance devs have a world made of big blocky voxels where you can dig and craft things, but also it’s got quests and dungeons and raids and classes and skills and levelling and MMORPG-y things. You know, a bit like Cube World. But you do get to build your own cross-server base.

World Of Cubecraft: Rift Dev Introduces Minecraft-Like Trove

Monocles and top hats in a fantasy setting? Zaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaany

OK, upon second viewing, Rift and Defiance developer Trion’s Trove looks more like Cube World than it does Minecraft. A lot like Cube World. Kind of eerily so. But I suppose it can’t be avoided now that the MMO genre’s been bitten by the voxel bug and– actually, wait, yes it can. EverQuest Next is voxel-based too. Hmmmm. Oh well, enough making block mountains out of block molehills. The truest measure of any game – visual similarities to genre heavy hitters or not – is in how it plays, and while Trion has a framework in place for Trove, that part will largely be up to you.
