Unreal Not One Of Epic’s New Games

By Jim Rossignol on September 21st, 2011.

Not this time, big guy.
We mentioned a while back that Epic were developing a number of new games aside from the Gears franchise, and we couldn’t help hoping against hope that perhaps one of them might be Unreal 3. Not so, says Mike Capps. Talking to businesslication Forbes the Epic bossman said: “Unreal and Unreal Tournament continue to have a huge influence on the studio here, even though we’re not currently working on an Unreal IP project.” It’s not the first time that Capps has mentioned the U-word recently, but it’s the first indication that they’re not actually doing anything with it.

Writing in a blogpost on PC gaming journal Rock, Paper, Shotgun Jim Rossignol said “Aww, that’s a shame. But perhaps they are working on something exciting and new! That would be exciting. And new.”

Epic has revealed the next generation of its Unreal technology in a behind-closed-doors showing at GDC, VG247 report. What was being demoed was not, in fact, Unreal Engine 4, but rather “Unreal 3.975,” in the jocular words of Epic vice president Mark Rein. Words and pictures follow, but not footage. I imagine that’ll be doing the rounds next week, or thereabouts.

Screwball Scramble: The Ball Trailer

By John Walker on February 18th, 2010.

I think his face may explain where the ball is.

You may well have previously played The Ball. Toltec Studio’s Unreal 3 mod generated a lot of attention back in 2008 during development, and then was released in 2009. It’s sort of Weighted Companion Cube: The Movie. You move around the world in first person, but you interact by manipulating a large lead ball. It’s used for puzzle solving, as well as crushing your foes. Now the project has become commercial, and is due to be released this Summer. Which means a new trailer has been created, and it’s a goodun.

Unreal Engine 3… Free.

By Kieron Gillen on November 5th, 2009.

Interesting times indeed. Following the news that Unity3D went free for its indie package, Epic announce that you can now use the Unreal Development kit for non-commercial uses. Crikey. Reading the licentiate details, if you actually want to go commercial it’s in exchange for a 25% of revenue after your first $5000. Which is a hefty slice, of course… but considering how much an actual full licence for Unreal is, it’s still has to be tempting. Examples of how this could change stuff? Obvious stuff: mods for Unreal no longer would require you to buy a game. As long as a team makes everything, you can just distribute them… and you have to wonder whether now because they can do it, they’ll try to monetize them. Other random prediction: teams trying to remake classics like Deus Ex. Which will never be completed, but the thought’s there.
