More Like Wargame: Rad Dragon

Yay! Explosions!

I’ll admit that I don’t often know what the hell is going on. This is a blanket statement that applies to many areas of my life – games, meals, showers – I’ve had confusion during all of them. But it’s not often that a trailer will leave me with quite the same pleasant non-understanding as finding a surprise Terry’s Chocolate Orange in my bed. The latest from the amusingly named RTS Wargame: Red Dragon managed that and, as I’ve discovered in researching this post, seems to have done the same to Graham. There’s just something about its collection of modern military hardware and explosion addiction that numbs my brain into quiet, happy appreciation. Hopefully you’ll see what I mean below.

Naval Gazing – Wargame: Red Dragon Trailers Still The Tops

By Graham Smith on March 18th, 2014.

Hannibal must be on one of the boats, right?

Wargame: Red Dragon is a large-scale strategy game in which you command imprisoned serial killer Hannibal Lecter as he assists in the creation of a wargame. The wargame is set in Asia during an alternate history 1980′s in which the cold war ran hot, and is being designed by Will Graham, whose apparent empathic gifts are only functionally useful in the creation of boardgame rulesets when paired with a manipulative and violent psychopath.

While Graham attempts to make the best wargame possible, your role as Lecter is to subtly sabotage the design without being caught. Do you dare suggest a roll-to-move mechanic? Will Will Graham see through your introduction of a series of random miss-a-turn fail states? Why is the trailer mostly full of boats and jets and military warfare?

The Only Winning Move: Wargame: Red Dragon Trailer

By Graham Smith on February 21st, 2014.

It's got war, it's a game... but what should we call it?

I showed the last Wargame: Red Dragon trailer to a friend who is knowledgeable about games. As it drew to a close they turned to me and asked, “What kind of game is this?” It’s a large-scale real-time strategy game with a dynamic campaign map, multiplayer, hundreds of modernish military units, and taut tactical combat, but I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not that you can’t immediately tell from the trailers that it’s not, for example, a first-person shooter. I do know it means it looks visually impressive. I do know it means you should watch the latest trailer, twice.

Once to appreciate how it looks, and a second time to double check how the voice-over pronounces the world “stealth”.

First Wargame: Red Dragon Teaser Trailer Makes Me Randy

By Graham Smith on January 8th, 2014.

Krakaoooow!

Wargame: Red Dragon was announced at last year’s Gamescom, but there was very little to see of Eugen’s latest large-scale real-time tactics game. Maybe nothing? I don’t know, I wasn’t really there. Now the first teaser trailer has been released and it has boom, bakoosh, skadoosh, krekekkkckckck, ra-tt-tt-tt, fwoosh, skrooooosh and fump-fump-fump. Even the YouTube logos at the end make exciting war noises.

The Wargame series has the scale of Supreme Commander, the dynamic campaigns of Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, the tactical nous of Eugen’s own RUSE, and it seems there’s a new entry in the series every year. I’m pretty sure we should all be playing these games.
