THQ (Sort of) Explains Warhammer 40K MMO Changes

By Nathan Grayson on April 11th, 2012.

This, of course, is the cover of a Warhammer fashion catalog.
THQ’s seen better days. The gaming world has all but left it in a gutter inches away from death’s door, bleeding worrisome amounts of money. Worse still, the struggling publisher took another set of brass knuckles to the teeth in the form of a radical downsizing of its great MMO hope: Dark Millennium Online. The Warhammer-40K-themed behemoth has been stripped of its two-ton subscription-fueled MMO supersuit, leaving its single-player and multi-player bits flapping freely in the air. How, though, does that work? Will I explore a desolate world, spamming an empty trade channel for [friendship] x 1?

Warhammer 40k Dark Millennium No Longer An MMO

By Jim Rossignol on March 29th, 2012.

Eurogamer has news that THQ’s MMO project, Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online, has been refocused as a single-player and multi-player online game. The game had previously been rumoured to be cancelled. THQ boss Brian Ferrell said: “Based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features.” Around 120 people across the Relic and Vigil studios have been laid off as a result of the change, which is depressing news. Hopefully we’ll firm up exactly what sort of game we’re left soon. A 40k RPG with online bits? Could be… And that would be okay by me.

THQ’s Financial Woes, Metro Pushed Back

By Adam Smith on February 3rd, 2012.

A light, a tunnel. Do you see?

Times are hard at THQ and that’s relative to the general hardness of the hour for the majority of people who rely on one of the world’s known currencies to secure food and shelter. The publisher is under threat of NASDAQ delisting, with its stock currently below $1 a share, and over the next year 240 staff will be losing their jobs. The company has shared its release schedule, which shows that Metro: Last Light is now scheduled for an early 2013 release. Other releases of note are the new game from Left 4 Dead’s Turtle Rock. That’s due between April 2013 and March 2014, as are Dark Millennium Online and Del Toro’s inSANE. Before April 2013, it’s Metro and “unannounced core titles”.

Vigilant: THQ Denies 40K MMO Cancellation

By Jim Rossignol on January 16th, 2012.

Rumours wildly frothed out of the internet this weekend regarding the financial peril of THQ. This chap, an IGDA fellow, said that Vigil’s Warhammer 40k MMO had been cancelled. He went to explain that the cost would be beyond the current wallet of the troubled company, and that it had also returned its Disney licence. GamesIndustry also has anonymous sources claiming that the in-development MMO is for sale. Newschums VG247 have picked up a contradictory statement from THQ Australia, which states: “THQ has not cancelled its 2014 line-up, and has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO.”

No “Room” For Space Marine Sequel

By Jim Rossignol on October 14th, 2011.

Aww, poor neglected old Ultramarines.
Speaking to Joystiq, THQ bossman Danny Bilson wasn’t lending support to the idea of a Space Marine sequel, preferring to emphasize upcoming MMO, Dark Millennium. He said: “We’ve already announced the Imperium in the MMO as a class you can play… and if you combine that it’s very active, as opposed to the more turn-based stuff. I’m not sure there’s room for Space Marine.”

Oddly, this awkward statement lends a bit of credibility to yesterday’s “leak”, which THQ later dismissed as “pure speculation”. It might well have been speculation, but it does sound like some of it is on the mark, and it’s not like they’ve not had some big info leaks before. Might be interesting to look back, come 2013…

Hmm: Dark Millennium Online Details? No

By Jim Rossignol on October 13th, 2011.

Purple: it's a colour that means business.
UPDATE: THQ sent this statement to Massively:

It has come to THQ’s attention that some media are reporting that we’ve announced game details and a release date for our upcoming massively multiplayer online project, Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online. At this time THQ has not officially announced a release date and any reported features are pure speculation. THQ will announce confirmed game features and an official release date at a later time.

Strategy Informer have posted a big old list of information about forthcoming Warhammer 40,000 MMO, Dark Millennium Online. I’m not sure where it’s derived from, since they do not quote a source (presumably everything they know so far from the limited previews and stuff) but presuming it’s genuine and accurate – and we are presuming – it contains a few interesting nuggets, which I’ve highlighted below. I think we were aware of a chunk of this stuff, but things like class details and so on have not previously been available to my brain.

Warhammer 40k Dark Millennium Dated 2013

By Jim Rossignol on October 12th, 2011.

UPDATE: The info has been removed now, so we must assumed it was posted in error. Whether that means it’s wrong, I don’t know.

We won’t be grinding nobz any time soon… THQ’s Warhamer 40k MMO, Dark Millennium Online has been dated for the distant future of March 13, 2013. This official website bore the news, with a bit of text about the “Sargos Sector” which will play host to the action.

Gosh that’s a long run up. Original announcement trailer from June last year is below.

Shine A Light: Dark Millenium Online Trailer

By Quintin Smith on June 8th, 2011.

In my future, Space Marines are rapid deployment Feng Shui experts

In the grim darkness of the future, there is only Warhammer 40k MMORPG Dark Millenium Online. No, seriously- I’m not sure that there’s another game we’ve been posting about this E3 week with a release date as far off as 2013. Curiously, this (brief) trailer brands the game as a “Massively Multiplayer Online Action Experience”, and when I had a brief chat with the developers at Gamescom last year I do remember them talking about how they were developing some revolutionary new kind of combat. Hmm. Will this be the first massively multiplayer 3rd person shooter? Only time will tell. So, so much time.

THQ Says 40k MMO Due By March 31, 2013

By Jim Rossignol on February 3rd, 2011.

That’s because they told their investors that the maximalist sci-fi Warhammer game is going to fall in the “fiscal year 2013″. That’s an imaginary year made of numbers that falls between April 2012 and March 2013. So the field is pretty wide, but we can expect it to turn up by the end of 2012, maybe. There’s actually a surprising amount of information available on the game, given that is is so far away, and we still seem to know almost nothing about it. See this interview, and also this trailer, and this screenshot gallery.

This Man Is Not A Space Marine

By Alec Meer on October 12th, 2010.

This man is a Space Marine

The one beneath the cut, I mean. At least, I don’t think he is, but I’m prepared to be more open-minded. He is talking about Space Marines, however – specifically what it’s like to shoot dudes in Warhammer 40,000 Online, an MMO still keeping the vast majority of its cards against its heavily-armoured, subcutaneously reinforced chest. This producer interview from GamesCom has only just been released for some reason; while it’s lacking new footage it does provide more detail on how the thing plays.

Inquisition: Dark Millenium Online Interview

By Quintin Smith on August 23rd, 2010.

Seems these are the five classes that'll be available to the Imperium. Go! Go! Try and name them all!

I’m interested in Dark Millenium Online, the 40K MMORPG. I really am. I just wish Vigil Games would reveal more about it, so while I was at GamesCom I hatched a truly brilliant plan. Unfortunately my sock full of pennies and painstakingly sharpened Biro were taken off me at the door of their booth, so I settled for a straight interview with Executive Producer Tim Campbell. You can read it right after the jump.

WH40k Dark Millennium 1st Faction Revealed

By Jim Rossignol on August 21st, 2010.

Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online is looking like one of the highlights of GamesCom, and we’ll have an interview turning up pretty soon. In the meantime you can check out this new trailer, which details the first playable faction: The Imperium Of Man. Not much of a surprise, granted. But playable Adeptus Mechanicus? That’s my first character already sewn up, then. Lots more footage below, go: behold.
